How Foot Care Improves Your Health

By Paul Semmes

The importance of directing more attention in maintaining our feet cannot be overemphasized. Nails require regular cutting, clipping and cleaning to prevent the accumulation of dirt which give way to opportunistic illnesses arising from the high presence of bacteria. The build up of harmful substances may trigger several disorders. Proper foot care is key to ensuring our feet withstand the effect of illnesses, sport, footwear and the environment.

Feet are an essential of almost every activity performed. Whether walking, exercising, running or just standing, having comfortable feet that are well cared for makes the experience more pleasant. Feet problems are caused by wear and tear, diseases, poorly trimmed toe nails, bad circulation, wearing the wrong size of shoes and poor circulation. They can be a sign of chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and circulatory and nerve disorders.

Exfoliation helps to get rid of any dead cells present on the skin. When these cells form deposits on the skin they are major causes of corns and bunions. These conditions are very painful. The removal of these cells stimulates the growth of new skin cells yielding an attractive and smoother foot. Foot baths provide adequate relaxation and ease pain. Individuals can perform several stretches and simple exercises to boost circulation.

Circulation problems are very common in old people. The may be caused by severe stress, cold weather, smoking tobacco or drinking too much coffee or caffeinated soda. These factors cause the blood vessels to constrict and restrict the flow of blood. This causes a person to experience numbness, tingling, cramping and discoloration of toenails and the skin

Pedicures are very effective in the ensuring the good health of our feet. A pedicure offers foot massage, nil care and cleaning services. The oils used add moisture and the entire process aids in circulation. It is therapeutic, relaxing and improves muscle performance. The pedicure chosen should be qualified and the equipment used should be sterilized.

Some conditions may be very serious and may require the attention of specialized professionals. Some injuries maybe very serious and special assistance needs to be sort. Podiatrists specialize in making diagnoses and treating problems affecting the feet. This profession is allied to conventional medicine. The signs to look out for are deformation, color change and hardening of the skin. These require the attention of a podiatrist.

The group of people that is highly susceptible to foot problems is diabetic patients. A problem presumed to be minor may progress to a chronic disorder beyond their control. Most of them are attacked by ulcers and several other conditions that may require amputations. This leads to disability, morbidity and emotional stress. If treated in good time, these may not occur.

The most effective to ensure our feet remain in good shape is to adopt preventive foot care. Wash them on a regular basis and ensure the spaces between the toes are rinsed and dried thoroughly. Wear proper fitting shoes, wear clean stockings or socks and wash them from time to time. Properly trim toenails to the right size and never go too low. These practices will ensure our feet are in top form and will enable us to carry out our daily activities more comfortably.
