Make a flower bed using used tires

By Gina Portwood

A good way to save on fruit and vegetables is to grow your own, like your parents may have done. It is not difficult to do it and not at all costly. The enjoyment of having fresh produce from your own garden is great. Many people also have a herb garden. You get a freshness and potency that you can't find in a store. Growing your own produce is very satisfying. In addition it is you who is in charge of what is added. You can be happy knowing the fresh produce is additive free.

You may be someone who would love a garden but doesn't have the room. Therefore people need to look at alternatives. One possible answer to this problem is to plant your garden in smaller spaces. This works because you can plant, harvest, and plant again during the season and still have enough for your personal needs. One good idea is to plant your garden in old tires.

You can find many places where you can get these for free. You might them for only $5.00 in other places. You only need four or five, depending on the amount of planting you intend to do. But large installations may require over ten tires.

The idea of old tires in the garden may not seem so good. Will the neighbors not like them? Covering them up with something can make them look much better. To increase their attraction try putting them in wooden boxes. Try making them look better by cutting the tires to look like flowers and then paint them. The rims of the tires could be used as a stand.

Decide on a place where you are going to put them and prepare the soil, by cultivating it down to 4 inches. For healthy plants you will need the roots to grow as deeply as is possible. Get some good potting soil/compost. You can buy this at Home Depot, Lowes or your local hardware store. Make sure you fertilize it properly and then plant your seeds according to the instructions. Water effectively but don't over water. Your needs will be filled from the small but efficient garden. Growing your own produce instead of buying it will save you money.
