The global scenario
Water pollution - its causes and effects are a major health concern globally in modern times. More than a billion people around the world have no access to safe water sources at a small distance from their houses, as per statistics. 400 million children are deprived of safe water as per estimations. Another serious matter is that water that is declared safe is the one that contains bacteriological agent which causes many diseases.
Safe removal of human waste is yet a faraway dream
Due to non-existing or inadequate sanitation arrangements, around two third of the human populace have no access to safe disposal of human waste. Improper disposal of human waste is a cause for contaminants getting into food sources and water.
Affects poses by water pollution
Unhygienic water is the root cause for diseases like diarrhea, trachoma, intestinal parasites, dehydration, parasitic worms, arsenic poisoning and other gastric intestinal problems. Children, older people and people with weak immunity are mainly affected by these water borne diseases.
The real problem in ensuring supply of unpolluted water
Most of the people from the low and middle income class of countries are the ones who do not follow proper hygiene and are not well trained in disposing human waste correctly. The main hindrances which would ensure water cleanliness and prevent water pollution in such countries are lack of education, insufficient funds and lack of interest in the executive agencies.
There is a lack of skills which are required to install and make toilets. This is strange that there are some local laws which forbid low cost sanitation, but the locality does not even possess modern sewage system.
Steps you can take to reduce water pollution
Some initial steps can solve the problem of the water pollution. Firstly check your personal water usage and take steps to maintain the sewage system. Use shower for bathing rather than bathtub that too for the required time. Like this take simple steps that will minimize the usage of the water on the personal level. Less water usage will keep the sewage system less congested and the system will remain clean. A simple action of yours can contribute to the whole community.
Secondly, one should control the use of water for the household utensils. We should remove the excessive food or leftovers before throwing them into the drain, but collect them in the garbage bin. This would reduce the pressure on the sewage works. Throwing all this unnecessary organic matter down the drain may be easy for you, but would cause the sewage system to get choked, and would not function smoothly.
Thirdly, while maintaining a car, avoid spilling and fluids which might cause pollution. Discard old engine oil or any other fluid only by putting them in a container and keeping them in a suitable waste reception centre and never use the sewage for their disposal. Also use less detergent to wash your car and see that the washings do not go directly into surface water drains. Finally, exercise some vigilance and if others are causing water pollution, alert the local authorities.
