Custom Jewelry Displays You Can Make Yourself

By Mara Boone

If you happen to design and display your own jewelry at fairs, craft fairs, malls or wherever, it is probably more convenient to make sure it is displayed in a fashion that shows it off and protects it. You can actually in a short time create custom jewelry displays, ones that even have their own locks on them.

It can be very easy to create your own display is by taking two picture frames that are exactly the same size. These are going to be the body of your display case. Take out the cardboard backs from the frames and then make sure you clean the glass well. Take some epoxy glue and glue the glass into the frames and let dry.

Once the glue is dry put your frames on top of each other. Taking the longer side of the bottom frame take a ruler and measure about three inches from your edge and take a pencil and mark it. Do the same thing for all the edges of the frame.

Get some hinges with screws and beginning with the frame that is on the bottom take either a drill or a screwdriver and attach one of the hinges to your case and then repeat with the other hinge. Take your other frame, place it on top of the frame that is the bottom one. Make sure the two are totally flush. Screw the hinges into the top one.

With your ruler you now need to find the exact middle of your case on the edge of the display that is opposite of where you attached the hinges. Take your pencil and mark that area. Here is where you will need to have a lock box with a latch and key because this is where you will attach it. Use the hardware that is provided with the lock and attach to the frames lining up the lock with the latch perfectly so that the display case closes properly.

You now are ready to put an insert into your display case. This is what you will use to hang your jewelry on. Use a piece of cardboard that is measured and cut to fit perfectly inside the bottom part of your case. You may even be able to use the cardboard that came with your frame. Take some cotton batting and fit it to the top of your cardboard and glue it in place. It is best to use a hot glue gun for this step. Take some attractive fabric and wrap up the cardboard as if you were wrapping a present and make sure the batting is on top. Simply glue your fabric in place and then put the wrapped up cardboard into the bottom part of your display case.

It is important to note that you may want to drill the holes for your lock and hinges prior to attaching your glass to your frames. By doing this, you will help prevent any damage to the glass.

Before you actually begin construction on your custom jewelry displays you might want to paint your frames a different color than the original. You do not want to paint them once all of the hardware has been attached because you may get paint on them.
