By Margarita Joseph

Those who enjoy household projects may find it fun to learn how to paint shabby chic style and transform their ordinary furniture into delightfully whimsical pieces. It is not difficult to learn and follow some basic instructions and one need only spend a small amount of money to produce amazing-looking furnishings.

Before starting, the piece of furniture will need to be cleaned off and dried. Next, if there is any attached hardware, these components must be removed and set aside if they are to be used later. If there are any noticeable marks, dents or other damage, it should be fixed at this time. The piece can then be thoroughly sanded, rubbing out any bumps and removing any shininess on its surface.

It is important to thoroughly sand the furniture because it will allow the new coat to adhere to the surface better. It is also possible to use paint stripper to remove any existing coat from the piece, as long as it is sanded after. All dust must be removed using a tack cloth before beginning the next step in the process.

Adding the primer is next. A primer is usually white and comes in both spray-on formulas and those which are put on with a brush or roller. After it is fully dried, a dark color such as brown or tan can be painted onto the furniture. This is the first color layer which will show through after the lighter ones are applied, producing the "distressed" look.

After the dark coat has dried, the first layer of light color can be added. It is best to select a flat, latex paint in a muted shade of blue, lilac, green, pink, white, or ivory. These paints are quite reversible if a mistake is made. With each coat, it's necessary to re-sand the piece before the next one.

The last coat should be the same color, only in acrylic lacquer that has a slightly glossy finish to it. Once this final coat of color has dried, the furniture will now need to be sanded around its edges and contours using a fine-grade sandpaper. By doing this, the first dark layer of color can show through which ultimately produces the shabby look. The amount of sanding one does depends on the look which is desired. The piece should then be dusted and left to stand overnight. The next day, a clear shellac can be applied to give it a finished look.

There is another method of distressing some prefer. Before painting, petroleum jelly is rubbed onto places such as contours, edges and such. The furniture is then painted layer after layer until it dries, then the color is rubbed away where the jelly was. This gives the piece more of a aging, chipped paint appearance.

The last step is to pay attention to any hardware. If they fit with the new image of the furniture, they can be put back on, or if not, some suitable new ones can be added instead. By discovering how to paint shabby chic, it's a great way to save money and also make one's home look charming and stylish.
