Why Most Long Distance Relationships Fail

By Dan White

You will not find points why you shouldn't start a long distance relationship in this article. You should understand that moving forward as a long distance couple has worked for many people and can work for you as well. You both have to put in the time and work for a good outcome. I will break down the main reasons why a long distance relationship doesn't work.

Unclear Expectations

People often have no idea on what it means to be in a committed long distance relationship. Many assume it's the opportunity to be free of their lover for a while. Other individuals think it's a heart breaking tragedy. You both must realize that this might possibly be more complicated than you think. But don't be disappointed. Just as I said earlier, the benefits can be fantastic.

Expensive Travel

In cases where you're fortunate enough to be in the same state as your long distance lover you might only have to pay for a train or bus ticket to visit with them. But if your partner is overseas, make sure to take into account the airfare that you must pay each time you want to see your companion.

A Lack of Communication

Remember that you must keep in close contact with your partner. It is often recommended by a marriage counsellor that couples should commit to eight hours alone with one another per week. As part of a distance couple I recommend you spend the same amount of time. When you move away from your partner and live separate lives it can be quite a challenge to stick to this. Also as soon as the initial "Disney-love" feelings have worn off, communicating over the phone will grow to get fairly tedious. That is why you should plan some interesting long distance dates.

Not Having Trust

Trust plays a big part in any relationship, but more so for a distance relationship. Many have a presumption that they can get up to anything they want when their lover isn't there. I advise against this notion. Engaging in trust activities and asking relationship building questions to get to know your significant other better will really help to develop a strong foundation of trust.

A Difference In Views

Two opposites won't stay together if you have totally different opinions about life. Before starting a distance relationship you should make time to talk about each others views on important factors of life. And don't forget that it can really save a relationship to modify your opinions and views to match your significant others.

No Long Term Plans

The key reason that many relationships are unsuccessful is because there are absolutely no plans for the future. Before you depart, be sure that you know where the relationship is heading. This will save a ton of heartache later on whilst you realize that you don't want to "take the next step" when they tell you they do.
