Successful Dog Potty Training Tips Revealed

By Geraldine Dimarco

It's serious business to train your dog to do his business right. I mean, you can't really say your dog obedience training is complete without having successfully taught your pet the proper way to eliminate-and that is outside the house right? Dog potty training is oftentimes an unpleasant task, but one with the sweetest smelling rewards.

Ideally, the best age to start potty training a dog is when he is 8 to 12 weeks old. Of course, this is not always the case because some pets are adopted, or maybe we just didn't know better then. Whatever the case may be, be of good cheer-- no dog is too old to learn new tricks and that includes potty training.

In dog potty training, it's all about mastering your dog's timing. What comes in must come out; therefore, if you plan in having your dog eliminate properly, do not give him food or water unless you can take him outside after 30 or so minutes. If possible, restrict his access to water to only when you are present to monitor him-this is only during potty training. Naturally, you must take into consideration any health concerns that might be aggravated without ready water available so be prudent in your training.

Take the dog out for a walk during critical times, mainly: when he wakes up, after every meal time (that includes snack times), after nap times and before bed time. When he is indoors, keep him near you as much as possible. Learn to read the signs when he feels he is ready to unleash the previously consumed dishes, and act on it accordingly.

The first one or two months will be a trial phase; thus accidents will most likely appear in your living room a few times. When they do, do not despair. Comfort yourself with the knowledge that it will all work out in the end if you just persevere. Repress your urge to yell at the canine for the souvenir he left behind because he will not understand why you are mad. Take out the poop and move on from there.

Canines are not as quick to catch on as we'd like them to be, so the trick is to keep repeating whatever you want to instill in him. Forming routines and habits is a process but a relatively sure one at that. When you bring them out, say a phrase that they will associate with discharging. It may be "do your business" or "go potty". He will soon realize this as his cue to eliminate.

The most effective dog obedience training tip is through positive reinforcement. Be sure to praise your dog profusely every time he successfully does his business outdoors. Give him a few minutes of playtime and after take him back to the house.

Most of all, always remember that you are not just training him, you are establishing a bond with your dog. It may sound peculiar to you, but have fun while training him potty. A great relationship with a faithful and happy dog is worth all the trouble in the world.
