Why Obstacle Racing Should Be a Gym Class Mainstay

By Rob Sutter

I'm sure that I'm not the only one who wound up becoming bored of gym class. The thing was that, with my gym classes, sports often repeated themselves and they didn't lend themselves to a lot of variety. For example, I don't think I can count off on my two hands alone just how often I had played volleyball and sports such as that. Obstacle racing could definitely serve as a great alternative to the typical sports that we might have thought about in the past.

I don't think that I was too bad at sports since there were a few in which I was able to hold my own in. I think that playing the same sports over and over again posed a problem because my attention span was not that great. Even today, I find myself juggling back and forth between subjects in order to keep my focus on whatever task I have going at the time. I wanted to cling onto anything that seemed even remotely different and maybe there are others who can relate.

As I grew up, though, I started to learn about events like Spartan Race which anyone could take on. It was surprising to me, at the same, to see that these people would stop at nothing to win, no matter what terrain stood in their way. When you consider this, obstacle racing is easily one of the more interesting concepts that I had seen in quite some time. I have to ask myself this, though: would my high school be able to fully grasp this concept?

When it comes to high school, there are a number of rules that are put in place. Students may feel like these rules are created in order to make life more challenging but they are cemented in order to keep students protected. It could be storming in an enraged fashion outside and yet you'll still have these passionate competitors who want to muscle through it all. This may work well for people outside of school but, once again, rules are set in place for a reason.

Even though I understand that schools have obligations that they have to abide by, it doesn't change the fact that obstacle races would have been enjoyable at the time. It seems like any sport that doesn't involve a whole lot of precision are ones that I can take on. For example, I may not be the best at catching fly balls on the field but I can dash pretty quickly. In this case, I would have been able to make use out of these forceful events.
