The Correct Way To Protect Your Home

By Mariam Knoles

It's not easy to imagine the worst that can happen, but we should always prepare for some kind of potential disaster in our home. Luckily, you may go through life never having to claim for anything as serious such as your home burning down or theft of your entire contents. In the rare occasion that something like this does occur, having a good home insurance policy will be incredibly important.

People can get contents insurance and buildings insurance, and they can also choose to have both options in the policy. Mortgage lenders usually require that you have buildings insurance, but contents insurance is left to the individual. The home and the contents inside can both be covered when someone chooses to get both options. Combining a policy when getting both kinds of home insurance make sense, and most times there will be a savings for doing them together.

What is included in coverage?

Loss from theft, and damages from fire, storms, or floods are typically protected under a buildings and contents home insurance plan. Buildings insurance can include subsidence and third party damages can also be covered. There is additional coverage available on many insurance policies that will cover accidental damage as well. Vandalism insurance can also be added, as this can sometimes be an issue for a homeowner.

People need to remember that there are varying degrees of protection for policies from home insurance providers, so be sure to discuss it in detail with the provider.

The property structure itself is usually protected against damage under buildings insurance coverage. If the home happened to be burned or destroyed completely, it would be the obligation of the insurance company to pay for the cleanup, and rebuilding of the home itself. This includes other fixed rooms in the home, such as a fitted kitchen or bathroom for example.

Items that are removable from the home, but are stored inside are what is covered by contents insurance. Typically, this may include all your electronics, clothing, furniture, carpets, etc. You may also wish to add additional protection to insure personal items such as smart phones when you take them out of the home.

How much is best?

As you calculate the coverage that you would like, take a good account of all of your possessions, so that you have the correct maximum amount to claim after an incident. When someone chooses to get the minimum amount of coverage possible, they may find themselves in trouble if an unfortunate situation arises, but they also don't want to get more insurance than they require. Having an accurate inventory of your personal items is essential. The value of the home, and the cost that it would take to clean up the lot after major damages must be taken into account when acquiring buildings insurance. Insurance policies can vary widely, so read yours carefully, and talk to your insurance agent if there are any parts of the policy that you don't fully understand.
