DIY Or A Designer: When You Absolutely Need A Pro

By Vickie Daeley

Sure, we all think we can tackle a redesign on our own. After all, we have good taste and we know what we like. Unfortunately, while that might be true, transferring our image of the perfectly designed room from our head to reality is much harder than you might think. When you are ready to update the look of a room in your house, many times it is best to hire a designer.

If your home already looks great inside, but you want to change it up a bit, simply rearranging things, adding new linens and updating a few accessories might be all you need. But for anything more than this, it is always wisest to call in a professional design team. Even if you only want to update one room, such as the family room or master suite, professional interior designers are almost always your best bet.

It might seem too big of an expense to hire a designer, but you have to think beyond the actual cost of hiring a professional. How much of your free time are you willing to devote to a design project? If you do it alone, you not only have to plan the actual design yourself, you also have to buy everything from paint to lampshades to furnishings to flooring. You either have to do all of the work yourself or spend time finding people to do the work for you. The rest of your life certainly doesn't stand still while all of this is going on. You still have to balance it with work, family responsibilities and other time commitments. It all begins to sound more like stress than something fun.

Even more fun than getting to do all of this work yourself is fixing the mistakes you make along the way. Every mistake you make costs you time and money. When you hire a designer, they not only don't make costly mistakes, they can do all of the work for you from designing the room to purchasing all of the items to hiring the workers. All you have to do is be clear about what you want and approve choices along the way.

Saving money and saving time are two big reasons why it is smart to hire a professional, but there are certainly several more important reasons. There are so many great choices out there that the situation makes selecting items very overwhelming, and a designer can narrow it down for you. If you and your spouse are at odds about what to do, a design team can come up with great solutions that you both will love.

Another huge plus is that a professional will come up with a finished product that is truly unique, and it won't look just like everyone else's home. You are a unique individual, and your home should reflect your unique spirit. Your designer can come up with that one-of-a-kind look you have been craving, and you will love it for many years to come.
