Considering Physical Security In Structural Design

By Cindy Hess

Physical security refers to the security measures applied by industrial engineers and architects to the design of structures to keep intruders and blasts from having access to the structure. This entails putting up obstacles and structures that can safeguard against hostile attacks. Putting up guardhouses and CCTV cameras may not be enough for buildings, especially large-scale ones, thus, physical security should be a clever mix of great design and physical safety measures.

A building's security is sure to incur heavy costs and may never be ideal. every building's needs are different from another's. There's no surefire way on how to fully secure a building, but risks can be minimized successfully. therefore, the principle of defense in depth is incorporated to protect buildings from intrusions. This entails a number of overlapping defense protocols, equipment and structural plan and testing.

Another key strategy in reinforcing the physical security of the structure is to make it Blast Proof. This entails creating a Blast Design that deters intruders and contain the blast in one area, far from where people work, of course, as much as possible. It also involves delaying the attack by putting up obstacles that could shield individuals, give them time to relocate or escape the area, and frustrate the intruder.

The physical security design of a building could be finished by layers. The first of which is creating a detection system where every nook and cranny of the property could be monitored. The following layer is creating an environmental design that entails setting up deterrents such as warning signs, vehicle obstacles, fences, trenches and security beam posts. The third one is with regards to implementing mechanical, electronic, and procedural access monitoring for personnel and finally, the final one is designing a proper response procedure must intrusions are discovered.

Properly planning the physical security of a building can guarantee the safety of the buildings and the people in it. By allocating some part of your company's budget on devising a good physical security program, you could save hundreds of lives and millions of bucks in repair and operations.
