Advice On Planning A Backpacking Trip Around China
Discover Foodie Heaven With Michigan Restaurants
| By Anita Ortega Known for its lakes, beaches, forests and freezing winters, the Mitten State is often associated with people who love the great outdoors. The state is also popular among sports enthusiasts. What not many people realize is that foodies will have plenty to rave about too when they visit, with plenty of excellent Michigan restaurants that show off the tastes of the region. Michigan got its nickname, the Mitten State, from the peculiar shape of one of the two peninsulas that make up the state. Its largest city is Detroit, also known as the Motor City. Lansing is the state capital and other significant cities are Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids. With its lakes and fertile soils, the Mitten State is a prime agricultural region. The variety of crops grown here is astounding, with cherries, berries, apples, beans and beets just some of them. Fish is plentiful in the waterways and livestock farming is an important industry too. Pork products, poultry and dairy are among the most popular animal products produced here. The state's population boasts an interesting and exciting ethnic diversity. Minorities include African Americans, Latinos, Hmong, Arabic peoples and Japanese. Most Michiganders have European ancestry, with immigrants having come especially from Germany, Ireland, Poland, Britain, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Italy. Where there is ethnic diversity, a wide variety of dishes follows. For example, immigrants from Cornwall brought the Cornish pasty to the Upper Peninsula, where it is a local specialty. The Italians and Germans brought the know-how for making wine and beer. Combine all these traditions with an abundance of produce and you have the recipe for fantastic cuisine. The ubiquitous cherry has even found its way into the chicken salads made here. For a heavenly sweet and creamy indulgence, try the fudge they make on Mackinac Island. At different times of the year there are different festivals that celebrate the many agricultural products of Michigan. Keep an eye out for these when you visit. However, if the thought of going to a festival completely dedicated to something like cherries or pickles doesn't really appeal to you, you may prefer the restaurant weeks in cities like Ann Arbor or Detroit. While Traverse City is the current foodie hot spot, no self-respecting food lover should visit without checking out the Detroit dining scene. Down-to-earth specialties in the city include the Coney Island hot dog and Detroit-style deep-dish pizza. Expand your horizons in ethnic neighborhoods such as Greektown or the Polish suburb of Hamtramck and if you prefer fine dining, you have plenty of options. There are more than 130 restaurants just in the downtown area. No matter where you are in Michigan, you'll find a great restaurant, deli or farmer's market where you can try the tastes of the Mitten State. Ask around, check the local listings and browse food and travel websites for suggestions. Another option is to let a specialist travel company arrange a culinary tour for you so that you can enjoy the highlights of this gourmet paradise. | ||

General Information On Permanent Labels For Fishing Gear
| By Anita Ortega There is much information available pertaining to how to mark your equipment. Each will offer different benefits and downsides. Many are customizable and versatile as permanent labels for fishing gear. There are several companies that produce these as well as the option to produce them oneself. It is common for someone to only need to mark part instead of all of the equipment. Some of the items to consider is the boxes for lures and hooks, pole, bags, tools, or any other related item that they may use. Each of these options allows for one to choose between several different ways, each offering benefits and drawbacks. Many find that having them printed is a good option. Not only does it allow one to mark many different things, but it allows one to have extra if needed. There are many different companies that allow one the opportunity from both online sources and local shops. Each does have its own ordering limitations and pricing. One will need to consider the different options before settling on this option. Many find that there are a large amount of customization options available when choosing to have them printed. These can include color, size, shape, font, and overall amount of information that can be put on. It is common for one to find that some of the options may raise the overall cost or cause the overall design to change. This option does allow for one to simply customize and order the markers, and when they arrive, simply place them in the desired spot. Many have found engraving to be a good alternative for larger, sturdier pieces of equipment. Examples of this would be like the pole, boxes for lures, bags, or tools that one may find that they need. This does provide a permanent, waterproof label for many. This does have the draw back of limiting where the mark can go as well as the possibility of needing to drop off and leave the equipment at the retailer for engraving. Many have found that the budget friendly option of making them at home can be a good choice. One only needs minor equipment like a computer and printer in order to accomplish this task. This is a good option for those who need the markers on a smaller scale but is limited to the persons own ability and time. There are some other options available, but they are limited. Bags can be embroidered, travel tags can be made, and the permanent marker is commonly available. These are commonly used for short term or limited marking but many do consider these options. With many choices available in marking equipment, many will consider several before selecting just one. Each of the options will have its own set of limitations as well as options for customization. One should take into consideration the use of each piece as well as the elements that it may come into contact with. | ||

Even Diana's designer can't stop Kate's skirt blowing up: Duchess flashes thigh as she's caught out by gust of wind on arrival in New Zealand
Despite wearing a noticeably longer Catherine Walker coat and dress on her arrival in Australia, the Duchess of Cambridge still managed to be caught out by a gust of windy weather.
Although the outfit’s hemline was around three inches lower than normal, it seemed Kate still hasn’t picked up on the Queen’s trick of sewing lead curtain weights into her outfits.
No sooner had Kate stepped off the plane than she managed to flash a length of shapely thigh.
Marilyn moment: The Duchess Of Cambridge nearly suffered a wardrobe malfunction as she touched down in Wellington, New Zealand on Monday with Prince William and baby George
Kate, pictured here in Canada in 2011, has had trouble with the wind before as she favours shorter dresses
Walker, a great favourite of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, designed the scarlet coat with two rows of pearlised buttons especially for Kate’s first formal appearance on tour.
The eye-catching colour and striking style ensured that Kate stood out on a grey and blustery day in Wellington. It was also the perfect foil for her son’s all-cream and white ensemble.
The Duchess clearly continues to be strongly influenced by Diana. The outfit was almost identical to the red skirt suit Diana wore in October 1989 to visit RAF Wittering - from the vivid shade right down to the the buttons, pointy collar and sharp shoulders.
At the height of her fame, the reticent, late Chelsea-based couturier Catherine Walker was synonymous with Diana’s glamorous dresses. She made over 1,000 outfits for her Royal client; the first three months after her wedding to Charles and the last a little black dress ordered a few weeks before she died; Diana was buried in it.
Some of them – such as the white ‘Elvis’ dress, pearl-studded with a bolero jacket – were among Diana’s most memorable and showstopping looks.
Kate has become the darling of the world's media in much the same way as Princess Diana did, and echoes her chic style 30 years later in a very similar outfit. She was wearing Catherine Walker, favoured by Diana
Late Chelsea-based couturier Catherine Walker was synonymous with Diana’s glamorous dresses, including these piece. She made over 1,000 outfits for her Royal client, even the little black dress she was buried in
She wore a Walker smock to leave hospital with baby Prince William, and Walker gowns – one white silk, another with a black halter neck - when she was photographed by Mario Testino for Vanity Fair in 1997.
Walker’s particular talent - and one which will appeal to Kate as much as it did Diana - was for making outfits that showed off the woman rather than the frock. They were dignifed yet - particularly post Charles and Diana’s divorce - more than a little daring.
Her clothes are statements of style rather than fashion, and the fabric and cut are always perfect.
So it shouldn’t have been that much of a surprise when Carole Middleton chose the fashion house, run since Catherine’s death in 2010 by her second husband and business partner, Sayeed Ismail, to make her triumphant pale blue coat and dress for the Royal Wedding.
The young prince wore a cream cardigan over a white shirt, matching shorts and leather shoes
Smart: Meanwhile, a hands-free William disembarked the plane looking dapper in a navy blue suit
The House of Walker clearly won Middleton loyalty on that day. Carole wore Catherine Walker again to George’s christening.
It wasn’t long before Kate turned to Walker too, choosing the label to make two stunning outfits for her first official trip to Canada.
One, a grey wool pencil dress, was particularly striking, showing off Kate’s slender post-wedding figure to perfection.
However, this week’s outfit won’t win as many fashion plaudits. It looked more Virgin air hostess than royal style icon - add a slash of red lipstick and a jauntily-tied scarf and she’d be offering you a glass of champagne before take-off.
Diana isn’t the only royal from whom Kate is taking style inspiration. She is also wearing the Queen’s diamond fern brooch, a gift from the Women of Auckland in 1954 and what appear to be American tan tights.
Hands full: Kate was carrying baby George and holding onto the railing of the plane's stairs at the same time
However, where were the hemline weights which preserve Her Majesty modesty on even the most blustery days? Instead, Kate’s fabulous thighs had another airing as she walked down the aeroplane steps, which sadly detracted from what could have otherwise been a polished look.
The Gina Foster pillbox hat, too – a little bit Jackie O, but a lot more Queen Mum – marks her out as one of the family, part of the Royal lineage, mother and wife to heirs to the throne. Her £400 shoes from London boutique Emmy (with a matching £200 clutch) make a welcome change from those nude LK Bennet heels she’s so attached to, and lengthen her already fabulous legs.
Her red coat and dress also showcased her neat waist and slender limbs beautifully.
Kate clearly knows - just as her late mother-in-law did - that a Catherine Walker ensemble shows a woman’s figure off to its best advantage.
World's Strictest Airport Security? Forget Tel Aviv. Think Kashmir.
The soldier and airport security guy are pointing, pointing. What do they want? Not my camera. Not my car clicker.
It's my pen. A Paper Mate soft grip. See-through plastic, flattened cap. Also -- I have no clue why -- my wallet. They ignore the I.D. and get to work on trying to strip out the little pockets that hold cards.
"Hey," I say. This brings instant reinforcements. Sullen faces. Khaki turbans. Guns under armpits, nightsticks stuck to hips.
My plane is loading but I'm taken out of line. I have a Wallet Thought: do these guys need a bribe?
It is April, a few years back. I am in Srinagar, in northern India. According to the signs this minor airfield is more scrupulous than Baghdad's. More tough than Tel Aviv. The "World's Strictest Airport Security" is at work.
I believe this boast. I only wish I could learn from the drill. Like almost anyone who flies these days, I'm easy. I'll do what I'm told if it will make planes safer. But being in Srinagar makes me realize: my obedience has limits. I want -- just a little -- to understand.
I've been frisked now four times but no one's glanced at my passport. As far as I can see, Osama Bin Laden himself would be welcome to board (though not his wallet or pen).
I'm one of a smattering of foreign tourists caught up in separatist shootings and grenade blasts in this city of Himalayan views. Srinagar is in the region of Kashmir -- nowadays split between India and Pakistan.
Militants are striving for statehood. I'm anxious to leave them, along with the sullen Indian soldiers and their security safeguards.
When I've walked on Srinagar streets, I've had to watch my step. Shoe-shine guys have bombed my Eddie Bauer boots, spilling mud and polishing it off for a fee. A man in large pajamas has enjoyed himself by trailing me around and trying to tear my sleeve.
The morning of my final day, I see a monkey on a wall. He's shaking a furry, clenched-up fist. I take this as a sign. I get the message. So long as I can get on a flight, I'm gone.
My suitcase is radioactive thanks to epic X-rays. At a checkpoint on the airport road. At the gate to the airport itself. Entering the terminal building. And, yet again, at check-in.
To top this off, I am informed that before any baggage makes it onto a plane, passengers must "identify" it out on the tarmac. You need a final stamp on your ticket stub and on a special tag.
The gate agent snatches my much smaller carry-on pack as soon as I arrive. She puts it on her scale. I snatch it back. It has a ring for my wife inside and I've heard stories about things being stolen, about bags that never arrive.
I lose the tug of war. "You are a man," she says. "It is forbidden for a man to bring any bag on the plane." This is when I first protest. It is when I have to give up my wallet and my pen.
What does any of this mean? I think. I imagine some militant in a field not far from the airport ready with his rifle or missile. I see a woman with her permitted carry-on: I envision it stuffed with explosives.
I hear an announcement: my "Jet Airways" flight to Delhi is closing.
I pull out two crumpled 500 Rupee notes (roughly 20 bucks). I watch the paper portrait of Gandhi as it passes from my hand to theirs.
It may be folds along his forehead, but I'm sure that Gandhi is unhappy. Angry at uniforms. Or frowning at what I have done.
There is a conference between caps and turbans. My cash is gone, but instead of heading to the gate, I'm marched to the side. Out through a service entrance where there is no one around.
I am thinking of trying to yell or make a run for it. One of the soldiers grips me by the arm and hauls me behind a pile of suitcases.
This may be it. I'm made to bend down.
"Now," says the soldier.
I get my pen back and my wallet. I am told to root around and find my smaller pack. What's this? I am allowed to bring it with me.
I have made it through the World's Strictest Airport Security. I get the final stamp on my ticket and let out a sigh of relief.
I understand now that security like this has meaning, has its cost. It's about the price of a Chicken Tikka dinner with dessert, a pot of tea and maybe some Indian wine.
I say a silent apology to Gandhi. I am out of Rupee portraits.
But I am going aboard.
