Fun Crafts & Art Projects For Children

By Kate Halfey

Many parents use arts and crafts as a way to keep their children happy and busy, but these endeavors have a bigger impact than simply keeping children occupied for a few hours. Art provides opportunities for children to be creative and solve problems as well as working out emotional issues. Art improves our concentration and attention to detail and also improves are dexterity. If you are looking for some fun ways for your children to get creative, consider the following suggestions.

When it comes to art, there is certainly nothing wrong with a big piece of paper, a few different sized brushes and some paint. This allows children to create their own unique art featuring any subject they like. While this is great, sometimes providing a specific type of project is a better idea. Children actually like having some directions or a particular theme. One great idea is to go to a website such as ArtProjectsForKids.org and purchase a downloadable template.

There are many different types of murals, and some deal with animals and nature scenes and others are pictures of historical figures or geographic places. In addition, you can also download mural templates featuring great works of art such as the Mona Lisa, Van Gogh's Starry Night, Andy Warhol's soup cans or works by Miro, Kandinsky, Cezanne and other famous artists. This is a great way to introduce your child to a new artist or perhaps highlight a style of art. The murals are divided into sections and after each section is colored, you put it together to create a complete project.

Once your child has completed that work of art, set up some projects in the style of that artist and let them explore their own potential. For instance, if your child really loved doing a mural of Seurat's Sunday in the Park, pack up some art supplies and head to your own park and have them look for their own pictures to draw. If your child enjoyed making a Georgia O'Keefe mural, buy different flowers and have your child create a special work of art based on a flower.

Art can also be a helpful tool when we are trying to teach our children about something, such as geography or history. One clever and easy project for kids to consider when studying geography is buying a PDF USA passport, which features a map of the world that the children can color. You can have them fill out the personal passport information and once they have learned about a particular country or continent, they can color in that part of the passport. Other art projects for young children include coloring mural portraits of famous presidents and iconic symbols of our country such as our flag or the Statue of Liberty.

Art certainly doesn't have to stay stuck in the second dimension. Get creative and plan some funky 3D art projects. This could be as simple as playing with a tub of play dough or building a huge, colorful tower made out of Legos. You can create paper mache animals, make totem poles from an old paper towel roll or make a diorama using an old shoe box and a variety of odds and ends. With a little bit of creativity, you can come up with dozens of great ideas and don't forget to ask your children for some ideas of their own.
