Appreciating The History Of Barrel Races

By Anne Kelley

Those who have witnessed barrel races could not help but admire the skills of competitors. One could not help but wonder how such events originated. What is more surprising is that the competitors are mostly women. Knowing how it developed will help one admire more such sports.

The exact dates when this type of racing originated is not really known. However, its roots can be traced back around 1930s when young ladies joined horsemanship competitions which involves riding horses in figure of eight patterns around two barrels. According to legend, it was the state of Texas where this type of racing first originated. Even women want to participate in rodeo events there but this was mostly dominated by men only. Therefore, they made their own event.

During World War 2, rodeo events were increasingly becoming popular among women. They started joining it. However, this soon waned as men dominated through bronc riding and roping events. Around 1935 the famous cloverleaf racing pattern of the women event emerged but had other judging criteria. A rodeo association of women was formed which is the official rodeo association of women recognized these days.

Making a career of these events can give a truly rewarding success financially and as a sportsman. This is because it has already grown into such a large event. However, this will require serious training and budget to find or breed the best horse. This is required as maneuvering of horses around obstacles at such high speeds requires both horse and rider cooperation. The fastest to complete one turn wins.

One run usually lasts as little as fifteen seconds in most professional competitions this days. The fastest ever recorded was 13.52 seconds by a racer named Brandie Halls during 2006. The rules to the race is not too complicated. One would only need to follow the pattern. Breaking it will result to disqualification. Should one tip an obstacle, a five second penalty will be given. Sometimes no time penalty is given.

During its early years, the horses used were mostly rejects. Those who do not do well in reigning, cutting, and racing were used as the sport was not that serious during its early stages. However, with the popularity and given the tough competition, special breeding is needed to produce that type which can meet the demands of such events.

Over the years, it has evolved into an event that is solely for women only. However, there are some groups which allow men to compete. There are clubs and associations which offer youth training in this discipline. However, its increasing popularity have made it into a sport that is well suited for families, not just for women anymore. It is now common to see men in these events.

This sport has traveled a long way already considering how much it has progressed from fairly simple beginnings. Unlike the former years when it was done as an alternative sport for women, it has now gone into a serious sport that even men are seeing the thrill of it and are joining them already. Horses are now specially bred just for this sport and riders give their best and exert much time and effort just to excel in this area.

Barrel races, be it on its own or as part of rodeo events, surely attracts attention. Horse lovers who witness such events are sure their expectations are met. From being a pastime to a serious event, more growth is expected from this in the future.
