Can Iron Skillets: The Greatest Way To Cook

By Temeka Groff

If you and I are anything alike, then you most likely grew up frying and eating food prepared in a pot or skillet lined with a teflon lining. Today almost every pan is made this way. They are sprayed with non stick teflon to keep food from sticking to the pan. You have to be extremely gentle with teflon coated pans, and you shouldn't use wire spoons on teflon coated pans or they will scratch. I am sure you all know what I'm talking about.

Nonetheless this was not consistently the case. Families in the past cooked in cast iron skillets. Teflon lining did not exist at that time, and they had to have something sturdy that could be around for a very long time. They had to have something that was created once, and put to use for anything. And cast iron was the preferred pan of choice.

These pans were extremely sturdy and could hold up to almost everything, from intense heat to intense cold, to even being dropped on the tile floor. People used these types of pans before modern technology. These pans lasted 45 years and were given down from generations.

Yet somewhere down the road, people let go of this excitement for pans made from cast iron. A pan much more time-saving appeared and we neglected cast iron pans. Nowadays most people make use of inexpensive skillets that aren't put together well, that can be easily washed. That's because this type of pan needs a some extra effort. Yet if you put in that additional extra effort, the rewards are well worth it.

Now not everyone has quit cooking with pans made with cast iron wholly. I personally cook with cast iron quite often, and they are really beginning to stage a bit of a resurgence. And that is because we have begun to grasp the value.

Allow me to explain a few of the qualities that help to make cast iron cooking sweet:

First, foods cooked in a pan made from cast iron taste great. It tastes a lot better than the things that you cook in a typical teflon pan. That is because of what is commonly referred to as the seasoning. The seasoning comes from not ever using soap to the surface of the pan, and maintaining the aromas that come from food cooked in the pan. The tastes remain sealed in the pans porous surface, and over time begin to develop rich, hearty flavors in the food you cook.

The second thing is, pans made from cast iron are automatically stick resistant if you care for these pans the right way. The pans do not have to have teflon or any unusual chemical to keep food from getting stuck. That is if immediately after every single time you use it, you coat the cast iron pan with a very fine covering of vegetable oil. This grease helps lock in the 'seasoning' and formulate a nice non stick surface. Over time, this seasoned surface becomes permanent.

And lastly, you are able to create anything with these pans. You are able to prepare veggies on the burner, cook steak, or even place your pan in the stove. They are super adaptable. Quite often I just keep my pan made from cast iron directly on the stove so I'm able to use the pan anytime I need.

As I said before, using cast iron has many pluses. I did not totally mention all the benefits here. Nonetheless if you might be considering acquiring one, I definitely think you should. It is a great addition and will really enhance your cooking. Also, cast iron pans will last forever. I hope a ton more people will start using cast iron pans just like we happened to do in the recent past.
