Facebook Surges Past $100 Billion Value With 1.9% Price Increase

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) saw its market value top $100 billion Monday as its stock rose 1.9 percent to $41.34 by the end of the day. The landmark is further confirmation that investors are betting on Facebook’s ability to earn more advertising revenue in the future.

According to Bloomberg, Facebook shares have increased 55 percent this year after slumping in late 2012. Though Facebook launched with a $16 billion IPO, its stock price soon plummeted, reaching lows of $17.73 at one point in September. Now, Facebook’s shares are trading at roughly 180 times its earnings, showing that investors are banking on Facebook’s ability to increase revenue soon.
“The market is gaining confidence that Facebook is going to be a viable profit-generating machine in the future,” Laurence Balter, an analyst at Oracle Investment Research, told Bloomberg. “People are checking their Facebook page more and more all the time.”
The jump in price is a significant boost from last week, when Facebook shares were trading for under $39. As MarketWatch reports, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg sold 176,452 shares of the social media company on Thursday at a price of $38.52 each, totaling $6.8 million altogether. At Monday’s value, the trade would have been worth approximately $7.3 million, not an insignificant difference.
Valued at $100.7 billion, Facebook is one of only a handful of tech companies to reach the $100 billion mark. Others include Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), and Google (GOOG).

Japan's Economy: Preview Of July Inflation, Industrial Production and Sales Tax Hike

Has Prime Minister Shinzo Abe really found a magic bullet for Japan’s woes? Maybe not.
While recent data have been relatively positive, in economics, things aren’t often what they seem. But it’s also worth noting that we are still in the early days of Abe’s program (he just took office at the end of 2012), so time will tell.
Japan’s core inflation rate, which excludes volatile fresh food prices but includes fuel costs, is expected to have hit its highest in nearly five years in July and factory output is seen rebounding, according to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. Both reports are due out Thursday night (New York time).
The nationwide core consumer price index is forecast to have risen 0.6 percent in July from a year earlier. That would follow a 0.4 percent increase in June and mark the biggest increase since a 1.0 percent gain in November 2008.
However, economists at Barclays still expect inflation of only 1.1 percent in the first quarter of 2015 -- short of the Bank of Japan’s “2 percent in two years” target for the overall CPI set in April.
Meanwhile, Thursday’s report should show that industrial production rose 3.7 percent in July, following a 3.1 percent decline in June, the polled showed. Other hard data include July retail sales (Wednesday) and unemployment rate (Thursday), which is projected to remain at 3.9 percent in July.
The Wrong Kind Of Inflation
Some analysts raised concerns about the details of the inflation data. It has come to their attention that although Japan is getting higher inflation as planned, it is the wrong sort of inflation -- the rise has been driven mostly by gasoline and electricity prices. And higher energy costs will raise business costs and eat into consumers' real incomes.
“The recent upturn in inflation should not be credited to Abenomics, at least not entirely,” Tim Quinlan of Wells Fargo Securities said in a note.
After 15 years in which deflation was the over-arching price dynamic, Japan’s central bank rolled out a sweeping new set of monetary policy tools to more than double the monetary base in the span of two years with the stated goal of lifting the CPI inflation rate to 2.0 percent.
In July, Japan’s monetary base expanded 38 percent from a year earlier to 170.39 trillion yen ($1.73 trillion), marking a record high for the fifth straight month. The BoJ said it will continue to inject money into the financial system under its Quantitative and Qualitative Monetary Policy Easing program, or QQE, for short.
“While we think the goal is laudable, we suspect in the final measure it may be difficult for the BoJ to pull off,” Quinlan said.
Japan’s ultra-easy monetary policy successfully drove down the yen. But a weaker yen is a double-edged sword.
It helped Japan’s exports jump in July from a year earlier at the fastest pace in almost three years, but at the same time, also pushed up the import bills by the most in three years. The key driver for higher inflation not just over the past few months, but over the past year, has been the higher cost for energy, specifically fuel, light and water.
Almost all of Japan’s nuclear reactors have remained idle since the tragic Fukushima disaster in March 2011, putting extra pressure on the energy import bill.
A few reactors are back up and running, but domestic sentiment has certainly become very hostile toward nuclear-generated power. The result of this in terms of inflation is that Japan is importing a lot more liquid natural gas and paying a lot more for it.
In most parts of the world, natural gas prices are much lower today than they were at cycle peaks in 2005 and 2008, but in Japan imported natural gas prices are at an all-time high, according to Quinlan.

Tax Hike
The biggest immediate problem for Abe is whether this week’s slew of data for July could strengthen the case for the government to go ahead with a scheduled two-stage hike in the sales tax from next year. The sales tax hike -- from 5 percent to 8 percent next April and to 10 percent in October 2015 – is designed to show markets that Tokyo is serious about tackling Japan's burgeoning public debt, currently 240 percent of gross domestic product.
Opponents of the hike say increasing the tax now would kill the positive momentum of an economy that has just started to recover. Preliminary data issued earlier this month showed Japan's economy grew an annualized 2.6 percent in the second quarter. That’s the third straight quarter of expansion, but still slower than the 3.6 percent expected.
The government will hold meetings about the tax hikes with executives and academics through this week. Abe is expected to make a decision before an APEC summit on Oct. 7. Officials have flagged revised April-June GDP data, due on Sept. 9, as key in reaching the decision.

Hours after a statement by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry confirming that Washington is sure the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons, which are banned by the international community, speculation is building that the U.S. is close to intervening in the two-year-old Syrian civil war by striking government targets.
Kerry said that President Barack Obama is considering “a response to the use of chemical weapons” and “has made clear to the Assad regime that [the international prohibition to use chemical weapons] cannot be violated without consequences.”
As Tuesday dawns in Damascus, seven hours ahead of the U.S. East coast, reports are intensifying that Obama may order an attack soon. The U.S. has been supplying Syrian rebels with nonlethal military equipment for months but had so far given no indication that it was considering direct armed intervention in a conflict that has killed more than 100,000 and threatens to further inflame the Middle East.
Last week's chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta, where the suspected use of nerve agents by pro-Assad forces may have killed 3,000 people, mostly civilians, turned the tide in Washington and has led to a sudden buildup of forces around Syria.
Airline pilots flying into and out of the Eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus told the Guardian they've seen C-130 transport planes at the Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri, as well as small formations of fighter jets on their radar screens, which they believe had flown from Europe to the airbase, a British Overseas Territory just 100 miles (160 km) from the Syrian coast. Residents near the airfield say they've seen much higher than normal activity at the base.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy has ordered an additional missile-armed warship in the area, and at least one aircraft carrier is close enough to Syria to launch its aircraft against Assad forces.
The C-130s seen at Akrotiri might have been American, British or Italian airplanes ferrying supplies, including bombs and missiles, from any of the three European airbases where the U.S. Air Force keeps fighter and bomber aircraft: Lakenheath in England, Spangdahlem in Germany and Aviano in Italy.
The fighter planes reportedly seen on radar may have been American jets repositioning to the Cyprus base, barely 20 minutes' flying time from Damascus. Among the assets that U.S. commanders can move to Akrotiri from Europe quickly, there are F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter-bombers that can hit both ground and air targets. KC-135 flying tankers from the Mildenhall airbase in England could also be deployed for in-flight refueling, while helicopters and Special Operations aircraft would also likely deploy to Akrotiri to rescue any downed pilots.

If the 2011 NATO campaign against Libya is any guide, a first U.S. strike could also come from Missouri-based B-2 stealth bombers, whose invisibility to radar could help them penetrate unseen Syria's considerable air defenses after a long flight from the continental U.S.
One advantage of using B-2 bombers is that they can be armed with huge bunker-buster bombs able to penetrate thick reinforced concrete. That would also serve as a test of their possible future use against Iranian nuclear sites.
Some experts, however, point out that Syria has a dense, advanced network of Russian-made radars and anti-aircraft missiles, which would discourage any first strike using airplanes. According to this scenario, the U.S. would use cruise missiles launched from ships to hit Syria instead.
A senior Defense Department official told CNN on Monday that four U.S. Navy destroyers "maintain readiness and, if required, could execute a mission within hours" of being ordered to do so.
According to naval defense website Navyrecognition.com, the U.S. Navy has four surface ships in the Mediterranean, all able to fire Tomahawk cruise missiles. Several sources report that these are four destroyers: the USS Mahan, which was scheduled to return to the States but was ordered last week to remain in the region, as well as the USS Gravely, USS Barry and USS Ramage. Each destroyer can launch up to 90 missiles, including the BGM-109 Tomahawk, a precision weapon that can hit with pinpoint accuracy at distances up to 1,000 miles (1,700 km).
The aircraft carrier USS Truman is no longer in the Mediterranean -- it left on Aug. 18 via the Suez Canal -- but its F-18 Hornet fighter-bombers are still close enough to reach Syria over Egyptian, Israeli or Jordanian airspace, adding another option to the array of possibilities likely being considered by Obama.
As for what American bombs and missiles would hit in Syria, it's unlikely that targets in a first strike would include suspected chemical weapons stockpiles. Destroying them would pose the risk of dispersing the chemical agents in the atmosphere, and the regime would probably not keep them in a previously known location. It's therefore much more likely that a U.S. first strike would hit command and control infrastructures, such as military headquarters and barracks, communications sites, as well as radar and antiaircraft missile sites. Striking those targets would make it harder for the Syrian armed forces and the government to coordinate military action -- and that would include any further use of chemical weapons.
