Precast Concrete Offers Variety and Strength

By Elaine D Rohr

If you are a construction manager of any sort (or someone who plans construction projects), you probably owe a debt of thanks to precast concrete. Almost any type of serious job involves concrete, and precast concrete (which has come down through the ages from the Romans, although it was lost for a number of years) is truly innovative. Modern builders are able to enjoy perpetual refinements that make it even more valuable.

If you are looking for precast concrete products, they are readily available. They are created in a kind of factory called a precast plant. This is a special manufacturing facility devoted to producing the highest quality of concrete. To this end, the vulnerabilities that pouring concrete can fall prey to, such as having the temperature fluctuate, rain (or snow), lack of worker familiarity or expertise, the precision of the molds put in place, and how long the workers allow the concrete to harden (or cure), are all thoroughly mitigated. And because the same molds (custom or standard) can be reused to continue putting out products, buyers pay less and wait less, too.

One typical use of precast concrete is in the construction of materials to implement in the creation of Drainage Solutions. Water - particularly wastewater or sewage - can be highly corrosive to many pipes, but precast concrete is highly resistant to this. Also, creating large-volume pipes for such implementations as storm sewers out of steel can be expensive. Pipes and culverts made from reinforced precast concrete are an economical solution. The uniform nature of the pipes from the plant helps ensure proper installation.

Sound Wall Barriers are another example that plays to the particular advantages of precast concrete. The uniformity of this type of project is tailor made for some tailor made precast concrete panels (and possibly columns). Either standard or custom panels would be available. The concrete itself might be mixed with another material to improve the sound resistance.

Precast concrete is fireproof, impervious to insects and other pests, and quite resistant to freezing and thawing (provided it has been properly cured, as precast concrete products will be). Precast concrete has good mass for providing safety and a strong barrier.

A mentioned, custom work is the bread and butter of a precast plant. Textures, finishes - even colours - can be made to order. Sweeping curves are also a possibility. Architects can let their imaginations soar when it comes to employing precast concrete in their projects.

Further reading can only reveal even more advantageous features of precast concrete products, such as ease of handling and improved site safety. If you are in the market for concrete products of this type, there are many experienced firms that can assist you in developing the materials you need to get your job done right.
