The brainchild of Marks Barfield architects, the London Eye has become the United Kingdom’s most-popular paid tourist attraction in the last decade, though it lost its bragging rights as the world's tallest Ferris wheel in 2006 with the 525-foot (160-meter) Star of Nanchang in the capital city of China’s Jiangxi Province. Just two years later, the Singapore Flyer pushed the bar even higher, to 541 feet (165 meters).

While the Flyer has held on to its title for half a decade, the stage is now set for an epic battle to see which city can create an even bigger, bolder and more impressive wheel. And in this increasingly crowded race to the top, there are many contenders.

First up is the 550-foot (168-meter) High Roller on the Las Vegas Strip. Earlier this month, workers hoisted into place the final 60-foot (18-meter) piece of the 55-story outer wheel in a new walking mall sandwiched between the Flamingo and Harrah’s hotel-casino. The observation wheel will form the centerpiece of Las Vegas’ upcoming $550 million Linq project from Caesars Entertainment Corp. when it opens to the public this winter. Each of the ride’s 28 enclosed cabins will have the capacity to carry up to 40 passengers for a revolution that will take about 30 minutes to complete.

In true Vegas fashion, designers will outfit the futuristic pods with flat screen TVs featuring audiovisual shows; passengers will whet their whistles with an array of cocktails onboard; and the wheel will light up the Sin City night with 1,500 LED bulbs.

Yet, Las Vegas will have less than two years to bask in its artificial spotlight before a 625-foot (190-meter) wheel rises above Staten Island in May 2016 with views of Lady Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. Richard Marin, CEO of New York Wheel LLC, hopes the 60-story attraction will lure some 4.5 million people across the harbor to the city’s “forgotten borough,” where a massive shopping complex and 200-room hotel will transform the underdeveloped stretch of harborfront real estate into one of the Big Apple’s top destinations.

“The Wheel will extend the tourism boundaries of New York City to its natural and magnificent limits,” Marin explained. It “will become one of New York City’s -- and the world’s -- great landmark attractions, alongside the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. In terms of size, scope and spectacular sights of New York Harbor, the 625-foot, or roughly 60-story, attraction will be the tallest observation wheel in the world when it’s finished, and the only one in New York City; rivaling the London Eye, the Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Harbor Opera House.”

Never one to be outdone in the superlative department, Dubai hopes to trump all others when it opens the 689-foot (210-meter) Dubai Eye as early as 2015. The wheel -- which would be about 1.5 times the size of the original Eye -- is expected to attract some 3 million visitors each year and offer them sweeping views of Dubai’s wonders, including the world’s tallest building (Burj Khalifa), tallest hotel (JW Marriott Marquis) and largest manmade island (Palm Jumeirah).

Other projects in the early planning stages include the world’s largest spoke-free design in Changzhou, China, and the Nippon Moon in an undisclosed Japanese city, which Dutch design team UNStudio has said will be “almost twice the scale of the wheel in London” and boast augmented reality views of the city in which it is built.

Several other cities, including Moscow, Beijing and Orlando, will open tall (if not record-breaking) wheels of their own in the next five years. Even in Las Vegas, which is poised to have the world’s tallest Ferris wheel for at least a year-and-a-half, two other projects -- the London Thrill and SkyVue -- are in the early planning stages. The SkyVue, for one, will have the world’s largest outdoor advertising screen in its center with a direct view from the flight path into McCarran Airport.

So why has the world suddenly gone loopy for Ferris Wheels? The answer is a simple one: prestige.

Have We Reached Peak Wheel?

The London Eye emerged in a city with few tall buildings or commanding views and offered something fresh and new: a way for a global city to look back at itself. It brought London out of the industrial age and turned it into what is arguably a post-industrial fairground.

“The London Eye proved you could build one of these wheels as a stand-alone attraction and it could work and it could be profitable,” explained Nick Weisenberger, curator of the Observation Wheel Directory and author of the book “Observation Wheels: Guide to the World’s Largest Ferris Wheels.” “But it takes the right ingredients to become such a well-known icon.”

Weisenberger said location, orientation, architecture, design, name and uniqueness all play a huge part in whether or not an attraction will succeed. He expects that the next generation of wheels will completely raise the stakes with more social media integration, transparent touch screens or even Google Glass-type windows in an attempt to stand out from the pack.

“Demand for giant observation wheels will peak at some point, but right now it’s continuing to grow, especially in America where we haven’t had any giant observation wheels until recently,” Weisenberger said. “It’s about bragging rights -- who can build the biggest. You see this type of competition all the time … It’s easy to market an attraction with ‘world’s first’ or ‘world record holder’ attached to its name.”

It has been argued that wheels can only climb so high, and that we’re quickly approaching Peak Wheel, which, if true, begs the question: What next?

“I think we could see some noncircular design shapes like a square, triangle or pentagon, where passenger capsules would move around a stationary track as opposed to a wheel turning,” Weisenberger supposed. “We could see observation towers with roller coasters attached to them, a concept called the Polercoaster, or also entire amusement parks built in a vertical, skyscraper configuration occupying a very small footprint.”

Thus, a new race is already underway to find the next bigger, better, taller and flashier showpiece -- something old-but-new-again, and something that can out-Ferris the out-Ferrisers of Ferris.

During bad weather conditions it also ensures that the safe footing is still maintained. Robust wheels are also provided which makes moving this item a simple operation for just one person. Next Stop, Bangalore: Japan May Help South India Build High-Speed Rail System

The Japanese government has expressed its interest in helping Indian railway officials to finance and build a high-speed “bullet train” from Bangalore to Mysore in the southern province of Karnata

The chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, told Indian media of Japan’s interest after having conferred with Hakubun Shimomura, the Japanese Minister for Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum meeting at Dalian, in northeastern China.

"A bullet train between Bangalore and Mysore [about 88 miles] is necessary as we want to decongest Bangalore,” Siddaramaiah said. “[But] one can reach Mysore in 30 minutes [by bullet train]."

Siddaramaiah also said that plans for a high-speed rail from Bangalore to Chennai (180 miles) are also on the planning board. With the capability of cruising at about 186 miles per hour, a high-speed train could travel from Bangalore to Chennai in a little more than an hour. "A bullet train will bridge the travel time between Bangalore and Mysore leading to their development as twin cities," Siddaramaiah added. "As Japan was the first country in the world to introduce bullet trains and operate them successfully since the [1960s], I am sure their experts will be able to guide us in having similar high-speed travel in the state as it will help us to decongest Bangalore.”

Japan will send a trade and technical delegation to Bangalore shortly to discuss the project, the chief minister added, citing that he was also impressed by an eight-minute bullet train ride he took between central Shanghai central and Pudong international airport (a distance of about 31 miles). Speaking more broadly of China’s stupendous economic advances in recent years, the chief minister gushed: "We have to learn and imbibe the quality [of infrastructure] and vision from then [the Chinese].”

The Indian government’s “Railways’ Vision 2020 document,” which was issued in 2009, spelled out the railway ministry’s plan to introduce high-speed rail travel to India. That program envisioned a rail network with at least four projects featuring locomotives traveling at up to 350 kilometers per hour (218 miles per hour). By 2020, the government hopes to add 25,000 kilometers (15,500 miles) of new tracks to accommodate the new superfast trains as well as conventional rail vehicles.

Perry, the creator of the “Madea” character and the “House of Payne” sitcom, reportedly plans to rename American Airlines – African-American Airlines.  The new Perry run airline will be targeted to African-American passengers, but industry experts say that many white, asian and latino passengers will want to fly the airline, “just to be cool.”

Sources close to American Airlines said the sale to Perry is in the best interest of  the company and its shareholders.

Perry said he will not only be the CEO of the new airline, but he also will be the CFO, the COO, the CIO, the director of human sources and, of course, he will pilot many of the AAA flights.

American said it is operating normal flight schedules, honoring tickets and reservations, and making normal refunds and exchanges – during the transition period.

Perry reportedly said he will slowly implement new changes.  ”I want every flight to be a positive experience for all passengers and I hope to turn every flight into a morality play of sorts.”

How will Perry turn a flight into a morality play?  ”He hasn’t figured that out yet, but there will be a Madea character on every flight,” said Perry’s limo driver.

This will be Perry’s first airline, but sources say he plans to buy an airline every year for the next twenty years.

The human corpse must have been dropped on the Moon from an alien spaceship, whereas the extraterrestrials kept some tissue samples for research.

NEW ZEALAND – A commercially developed jetpack, The Martin, is ready for liftoff!

The first commercially developed jetpack, The Martin jetpack, is ready for mass production and will soon be released to the public.  The City of Los Angeles has already ordered 10,000 jetpacks for its police, paramedics and fire department.  “We’ll all be flying around L.A. soon,” said Mayor Antonio Villaragoisa.  “And it’s another great tool for law enforcement.”

The LAPD is in the process of hiring over 1,000 Law Enforcement Jet Pack Officers.  They have begun training them out near Joshua Tree National Park.

Jetpacks are real, and you’ll be able to buy one in two months!

The Martin Jetpack  is reusable and while it is a bit pricey, and a little bit bulky, they are worth it.  Soon you will be able to strap on your jetpack and liftoff for work.

You strap it on, you fly.   It’s that simple.  “They developed it so even the dumbest among us can use it,” said aerospace engineer, Todd Cox.  “Cars will be in the dustbin of history soon enough.”

The jetpack was developed by the Martin Aircraft Company which was founded in 1998 and operates out of New Zealand.  The Martin Aircraft Company was founded by Glenn Neal Martin, not to be confused with Glenn Luther Martin, whose “Glenn L. Martin Company” became the “Martin” in “Lockheed Martin.”   My favorite Martins!

The Martin jetpack can carry a person up to 8000 feet in the sky or the 31.5 miles distance that travelling at the maximum regulated speed of  63 mph will take you. With a full tank of gas, that would last roughly 30 minutes, although Martin Aircraft expects that to improve as the manufacturing process becomes more efficient. They are working on a second model that can take you to the moon.  That’s a few years off…

The jetpack is convenient for locations where parking might be an issue. Standing 5 feet tall by 5.5 feet wide, with a length of 5ft.  And if you use stack parking, experts predict you can put about 20 in your driveway.  Meet the Jetsons!

Many of the specs for the jetpack are regulated by FAA restrictions, including the 5 gallon fuel tank and the areas that the vehicle can legally operate. The FAA does not require that users- who will almost certainly be referred to by owners as “pilots”, or “rocketeers”- will however need to file a flight plan before ripping off into the heavens. How the police or an FAA official would be able to catch pilots that fail to file a flight plan is unknown, but odds are they would find a way.

Currently the Martin jetpack is classified as a recreational vehicle, but it is restricted to non-urban airspaces for individuals – at the moment.  Laws will have to be changed and amended to deal with the onslaught of jetpacks and rocketeers.

The price at the moment is $100,000, but the company hopes to bring the cost down dramatically in the near future.
