I'm not sure who looked more worried. Me or the honey-brown horse. The weight limit for riding these beautiful steeds through the Jamaican surf was clearly marked at 220lbs.
Like a boxer pre-fight, I was nervous about whether the scales would tip in my favour. To our mutual relief, my weight is 218lb, so I donned my helmet and our riding adventure began.

Our small group trotted along the golden sands with our guide leading the way, stopping only briefly to tell us about the pristine beaches that fringed our base, the gorgeous white-washed Thomson Platinum Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa, which lies in Jamaica's north-west.
With confidence growing throughout our trek, we were eventually brave enough to move right out into the warm sea water, letting these noble creatures get in thigh-deep and cool off.
With a demanding filming schedule that takes me away from home - and thus also from my fiancee Jill - I had just a few requirements for our spring holiday. Our location had to be relaxing; somewhere we could spend time as a couple away from the hectic world of television, where we both work.

Another must-have was the weather. Britain's seemingly perpetual winter had made me crave some sunshine. And the Caribbean didn't disappoint. During our visit in late March, we enjoyed cloudless skies and warm seas (had my faithful horse faltered and tipped me in, the water temperature would have been the least of my worries). It was blissful!
A twenty-minute drive from Montego Bay, the resort lies in Lucea, one of the island's quieter spots. It has caught the eye of Hollywood before now; the hit film about the Jamaican bobsleigh team, Cool Runnings, was shot here.
I had fancied trying a few watersports - the hotel offers everything from kayaking to windsurfing. But in the end, some much-needed rest and relaxation proved more tempting and I chose to watch my fellow guests get active from the comfort of our own personal cabana.
The all-inclusive resort was popular with our friends from across the Pond and there were few British accents to be heard. A minor quibble was that the hotel was so geared up for the lucrative US market that it used American dollars, which means British tourists have to bring two currencies if they want to step outside and explore other parts of the island.

With time spent in the police force and seven years as a presenter on the BBC show Crimewatch, I'm perhaps more conscious of safety than your average holidaymaker and Jamaica has occasionally featured in the news for the wrong reasons. However, any reservations I had were quickly forgotten once we arrived in resort. There's an obvious security presence which proves reassuring for guests.

The beach here is private, which means you can really relax and enjoy these idyllic sands. In fact, more than once during our week-long stay we saw couples getting married on them. It's a very romantic way to do it and we were half-tempted ourselves - but we'll probably opt for a closer-to-home bash when we finally say 'I do' - it can be difficult to get all of the people you want there on your special day if your venue is thousands of miles away.
The Caribbean will always hold a special place in both of our hearts though. It's where I proposed last summer. An August trip to Barbados in 2012 saw our hotel battered by a hurricane. We had to hunker down in our room while the wind and rain howled outside. That's when I chose my moment!

Back to Jamaica... winding down was our key aim, so we also took time to soak our cares away. There are five beautiful swimming pools and a spa pool area that we really enjoyed. I've never really gone in for spa treatments before, but it's something I definitely wouldn't mind trying.
After dark, it was feast time and we made sure we sampled as many of the rainbow of restaurants - there are seven - as we could. The food was really good and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Bubba's Restaurant, a barbecue and grill won my heart - and my stomach. There was also Italian, Indian and plenty of locally-inspired food too. I loved the jerk hut, which served chicken and pork in the Jamaican way, with lots of fiery spices.
And the best after-dinner digestive was the resort's nightlife. There were plenty of live shows in the evening; you didn't need to leave at all - and there are 13 bars and a nightclub so you're never far away from your next cocktail.
