 Minister of State Management Reforms Navin Dissanayake has sent his letter of resignation from his Ministerial post, to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
In the letter, Dissanayake explains the reasons behind his resignation adding among them was that he was unable to carry out his responsibilities and meet the needs of the people in Nuwara Eliya District, who he represents.
While also resigning from the Nuwara Eliya electorate coordinating council, Dissanayake says he hopes join hands with the forces mobilising to abolish the executive presidency.
Extracts from his resignation letter:
“I never got the opportunity to serve the rural people of Nuwara Eliya despite being their MP and Minister. I was never able to achieve those goals. Although some ministers were granted unlimited funds and the approval to create many jobs, ministers like I, who were serving the rural people were provided meagre funding and very few job opportunities to provide to people. Although this issue was brought to the attention of political leaders, the responses were never adequate or satisfactory.
My late father Gamini Dissanayake and his colleague Lalith Athulathmudali expressed the strong opinion in 1990 that the executive presidential system had to be abolished or subject to serious reform. In 1994, my father’s election manifesto in the presidential election also included these provisions. Even the Mahinda Chinthana and Mahinda Chinthana Idiri Dakma contain clauses referring to these reform proposals. Twenty years after my father’s death, there is a clarion call from all sections of society to abolish this system. Therefore, I hope to join hands with the forces mobilising to abolish the executive presidency.
Three weeks ago I revealed a Rs. 1.5 billion fraud in the purchase of coal for the CEB by the Power and Energy Ministry. This is just one instance. I am also aware of the many irregularities in Chinese projects. This situation has become one that I can no longer abide.
I joined hands with you in order to help you to end the war. As a father of two children I wish to thank you for concluding the war. However our political journeys differ, I have no personal animosity with you. This is entirely a decision being made on principle. Common opposition Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena today began his election campaign at his electorate in Pollonaruwa by pledging not to use cutouts or polythene as part of his election campaign.
Speaking at the rally in the presence of opposition United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and other senior UNP members, Sirisena said that while cutouts of President Mahinda Rajapaksa had already appeared at several locations, his image will be cutout in the hearts of the public.
Maithripala Sirisena said that he had nothing personal against President Mahinda Rajapaksa and that the concerns he had were only based on principle and policy.
He said that around six months ago he had raised his concerns over corruption in the Government but he was told he cannot sit in the Government and raise such concerns.
Sirisena told the participants at the rally that eventually he could no longer remain in the Government when opinions are not taken seriously.
“If decisions are taken based on what one family thinks. If the central committee decisions are not accepted. If there cannot be space for debate within the party, I am unable to remain in the Government,” he said.
He said that today Ministers, Government officials, the police and the media are unable to carry out their duties independently without fear and intimidation.
Sirisena said that in his opinion it is better to die a hero than live in fear and he left the Government by placing his life and that of his family in the hands of the nation. (Colombo Gazette)
 Minister of Lands and Land Development Janaka Bandara Tennakoon today made an emotional appeal to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) saying it needs to correct some of its mistakes.
Speaking at an event in Dambulla, the Minister broke down at one point saying he will point out the mistakes in the government but not leave the SLFP as that would go against his late father’s wishes.
Tennakoon said that he had recently told President Mahinda Rajapaksa that certain people need to be removed from the SLFP and while the President had agreed, those people are still in the SLFP.
The Minister said that he had even raised his concerns about the SLFP with the President’s son Namal Rajapaksa.
“I had said once there are drug addicts and drunkards in our Government. I even say that now,” the Minister said.
He recalled that recently there was speculation he would join the opposition and the rumors had increased after Maithripala Sirisena left to contest for Presidency.
The Minister said he will never go against those who voted for him by joining the opposition and instead will stay in the government and fight for what is right.
“No matter what problems my father faced he continued to support the SLFP. I told the President, sir I will never leave this party. If I do that my father will get up from his grave and beat me. I love this party so much. I don’t expect anything in return from this party,” he said.
Tennakoon said that he is not worried over what will happen to him for saying the truth and despite being disappointed he will still remain with the SLFP. He urged the SLFP to listen to people like him as he speaks from the heart. (Colombo Gazette)
 The House of Lords is to have a short debate on Sri Lanka next month, the second such debate to take place within a span of one month.
The main focus of the debate scheduled for December 11 will be on bilateral trade between the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka.
Last week the British House of Lords discussed Sri Lanka, including the lifting of EU sanctions on the LTTE and the Presidential elections.
In response to a question, Lord Wallace of Saltaire, a cabinet spokesman at the House of Lords, said that the British Government and others are talking about the best way in which to make sure that there is effective monitoring of the elections.
Lord Bach had then spoken about the upcoming Presidential elections and asked if the history of such elections in the past and reports last weekend suggesting that common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena’s first broadcast has been blocked and his bodyguards removed, if the British Government believe there are prospects for a free, fair and inclusive election.
In response Lord Wallace of Saltaire said the British Government and others are talking about the best way in which to make sure that there is effective monitoring of the elections and will be raising such issues with the Sri Lankan Government.
