CSE launches a twitter handle to disseminate information

The Colombo Stock Exchange has launched a twitter handle @CSE_Media, to disseminate market information to investors via twitter feed.

CSE says its latest initiative will help retail investors, media personnel and students who are eager to receive on-the-go information from the stock exchange on a wide variety of areas.

“The venture into social media follows the CSE’s launch of an Android Mobile Application which has seen a resounding response from those eager for up-to-date market information,” a statement from the CSE said.

The statement says, currently the twitter handle offers updates on corporate disclosures, CSE circulars, SEC directives, CSE media releases, and upcoming and ongoing events.

“Twitter followers will also receive a close-of-trading update on the two main indices, share volume and market turnover, linked to the market summary report for the day,” the statement further said.

“As we aim to bring in more retail investors the need to disseminate information faster and keep our investors informed of changes that could affect their investments has become of prime importance. By utilizing social media we hope to reach our younger stakeholders through a medium they are familiar with and access often. In 2013 we saw over 200 active accounts being opened by those within the 18 to 25 age group and thus we see this demographic as a vital element in the growth of the retail investor segment,” Chairman of the CSE Mr. Krishan Balendra was quoted as saying.

CSE gets an opening Bell from Bansei Securities of Japan

Bansei Securities of Japan has gifted the Colombo Stock Exchange a new opening bell, announced the CSE.

The presentation coincided with the listing of Bansei Royal Resorts Hikkaduwa on the Diri Savi Board of the CSE.

Bansei Securities is a long established Securities Company operating in Japan and holds a 39 per-cent stake of the Bansei Royal Resorts Hikkaduwa.

The company has been involved in the trading of equity, government debt and corporate debt since July 2012 having been introduced to Sri Lanka by NWS Holdings Pvt. Ltd.

“Inclusively Bansei Securities has invested over Rs. 20 Billion in Sri Lanka, in both equity and debt, in addition to being a 15 per-cent shareholder of Pan Asia Bank and operating Bansei Securities Finance Pvt. Ltd, a local Margin Trading Company,” a statement from the CSE announced.

“Sri Lanka and Japan have had a long standing friendship that encompasses economic, social and cultural cooperation. As a prudent investor in overseas markets we believe that Sri Lanka is an ideal location for Japanese companies to channel their funds in order to reap fruitful rewards, which are mutually beneficial,” Bansei Securities President Mr. Toyohiko Murakami said.

“A new opening bell, is part of the CSE’s efforts to reinstate the traditions of the Stock Exchanges of old with a more transparent viewing gallery and renewed efforts to attract visitors to the trading floor,” added a statement issued by the Chamber.

Modern busy world makes us travel around the world for various purposes, on business or just for fun. Anyway the process of packing necessary things and making all the preparation is a real challenge. The day of departure is always hustling and fussy. Sometimes it is just impossible to bear in mind all the stuff, and you inevitably forget to do something. That`s why I find it important to start your preparations the day before. Read this list of important things, which you are to do a day before you close the front door behind you.

1. Pack and check

As a rule, we hastily pack suitcases on the day of departure. That`s why many necessary things get left at home. It would be ideal if you considered what exactly you need to take and make a list. Unfortunately, a few people do so, that`s why another option is to divide your things into two parts. Firstly, put in the suitcase necessary clothes and all the stuff you don`t need while you are still at home. Then go cosmetics and bathing accessories. Give yourself the trouble and recheck everything carefully, including your hand luggage. If you travel by plane take care of the weight and size of your suitcases.

2. Check the weather

Which weather conditions you have at home and that are at your destination place is a matter of life and death. Knowing what to expect from the climate at the destination place you will have time to think over the clothes you need to pack. Moreover, you are to be ready if the weather at home suddenly changes and your flight may be delayed. 5. Charge your electronics

You`ll definitely have to take some devises to amuse yourself during the journey: a phone, a laptop, a tablet, a mp3 player, etc. All the devises should be charged beforehand. And don`t forget to pack their chargers also. You`ll most probably need to charge them as you arrive. Take care of the necessary adapters which you might need when you travel to another country. You are not eager to have a discharged phone in a completely unknown environment, don`t you?

6. Call your bank

As you use your card abroad, the bank may consider it as a suspicious activity and block it, leaving without financial supply. Such problems are very difficult to solve when you are abroad, and they are very common I must admit. So take all the necessary measures to avoid such a displeasing situation. Make a call to your bank and warn them. Even if you most likely wouldn`t use it there warn them anyway. You can never foresee what kind of emergency can happen.

7. Check everything

Make sure you have booked the tickets, no flight is delayed, and the hotel has confirmed your booking. The last thing you need is such an unpleasant surprise that something went wrong. Settle all matters connected with the taxi, rental car, pet-sitter, parking, etc. Don`t forget to take all the necessary documents, credit cards and cash. It`s better to exchange currency in your country beforehand as at your destination place it may be more expensive.

8. Make sure your bills are up to date

If you leave for quite a long time you`d better take care of all the bills you receive so that don`t have to be in debt or rush to the bank the moment you come back. Settle all the financial matters before departure and you won`t have to worry about anything while being far away from home. Also return the books to the library, or all the borrowed things.

9. Other things

Especially when you are going in a long-termed travel, you have to take care of numerous details. Ask your neighbor or a friend to watch your plants, stop the press delivery, and redirect your mail. You`d better warn your close relatives that you`re leaving so that they wouldn`t worry. Complete all the unfinished stuff so it wouldn`t cause you troubles when you come back.

Euro zone banks buy govt bonds in Feb: ECB data

At a market value of 415.6 billion, Italian banks' holdings of government bonds remain the largest in the euro zone.

FRANKFURT: Euro zone banks mainly increased their holdings of sovereign debt in February after banks passed the year-end deadline for balance sheet data under the European Central Bank's asset review, ECB data showed on Thursday. Italian banks bought sovereign debt and recorded a 6.5 billion euro ($8.96 billion) rise after a 6.9 billion decrease in January.

Greece also saw an increase, with banks buying 439 million euros of sovereign debt.

Adjusted for market value, Greek banks' sovereign debt holdings rose to 13.8 billion euros. Spanish banks, on the other hand, sold 2.3 billion euros worth of government bonds in February, after bying 20.4 billion worth of them in January.

Portuguese banks also decreased their government debt holdings by 3.2 billion euros, with the market value falling to 37.2 billion.

Chinese MH370 relatives renew pressure on Malaysia envoy

"All the things that were promised, we have received nothing. Was the ambassador talking out of the other end of his body -- was he talking out of his arse?" one relative said.BEIJING: Frustrated relatives of Chinese passengers aboard missing flight MH370 demanded answers from the Malaysian ambassador for a second consecutive day Wednesday, with some openly insulting him at a Beijing hotel.

His comments drew applause from other family members, querying why some of the help previously provided by Kuala Lumpur to the families in Beijing had been withdrawn.

The ambassador, Iskandar Sarudin, explained that Malaysian administrators had been withdrawn from the hotel at the request of Chinese authorities as "emotions had been running high" after Prime Minister Najib Razak said satellite data suggested the flight had gone down in the southern Indian Ocean.

But his words did little to soothe the angry relatives and some accused him of having "unfounded" prejudices against Chinese people.

Two-thirds of the 239 people on board the missing aircraft are Chinese citizens.

The showdown at Beijing's Lido Hotel came a day after scores of emotional family members descended on the Malaysian embassy, linking arms and denouncing Kuala Lumpur after Najib's announcement.

Many of the 300 relatives who crowded the briefing room for Wednesday's meeting -- which lasted more than four hours -- accused senior Malaysian officials of announcing the plane's loss without firm evidence.

"There is no sign of the plane, so for what reasons are you so ready to confirm that it has crashed?" one man shouted angrily at the panel, made up of the Malaysian ambassador and military and transport chiefs.

"We demand you retract that the plane has crashed into the sea," another said furiously.

About 15 uniformed security personnel surrounded the panel, with another 25 standing guard at the rear of the room.

The Malaysian officials said they had relied on evidence from the Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch and British satellite company Inmarsat, and gave a presentation on the findings -- to which some family members responded with derision.

"You have paid all this money for a rubbish report, and they are pulling a fast one on you!" one man shouted angrily to applause.

"Have you got no other information other than those bloody slides?" said another.

Many family members gathered at Wednesday's briefing continued to cling to conspiracy theories as well as the hope that the lack of physical evidence might mean their loved ones are still alive.

At one point, a lieutenant general of the Royal Malaysian Air Force told the crowd he had not ruled out any possibility, including hijacking.

"If you have not ruled out any possibility, that includes the possibility that our loved ones are alive, right?" one relative asked to cheers.
