Minimalist Money: 8 Ways to Simplify Your Finances

I do love the art of minimalism. Minimalism is an approach that assumes less is more, or to simplify. Sometimes it can be really hard to implement in different areas of our lives. Especially with our finances.

I think we all envision a world where money is simplified. Where our bills are paid, savings is applied automatically and financial perks are generously applied; however, there are endless options for credit cards, bank accounts, saving, organizing and yes, investments. It can be really overwhelming. Many of us have more than one option when it comes to these financial services. Making it less than minimal and simple.

How then do you simplify your finances in a world that gives you so many choices? I'm glad you asked. I'll give you my financial minimalist approach.

1. Cash. Yep, cash is king. Using cash to make purchases is really simple. You don't have anything to sign at the register. Plus, you don't get a statement every month. If you pay with cash, there's no worries about overdraft, pin numbers or interest. What could be simpler?

2. Use only two credit cards. If you like using credit cards, then consider cutting those down to just two. One for everyday purchases and a second that has low interest when you have to carry a balance. You really don't need all those gas and department store cards. They all take these major cards. I love my American Express card because I pay the balance in full every month.

3. Automate. Let's start with direct deposit. I love this. My check is there on payday. No lines, no deposit and no bank holds. It's just there. You can also set up auto payment of your bills. This works great with recurring bills like your mortgage or car payment. You can automate your savings, too. Online banking allows you to transfer a set amount to transfer to savings every month. Voila! You are living a more simplified financial life.

4. Batch bill pay. Aside from a few bills that come in later in the month, I pay all my bills once per month. Why? I never really have to worry about due dates and it's much simpler. You get it over with. You also don't feel as though you are constantly paying bills.

5. Choose one financial institution. I've always had a hard time with this one too. I love my local credit union. I also love USAA, too. I've found a way to use both over the years for different things. If you really want to simplify your finances then just use one financial institution. There are added benefits other than simplicity too. When you consolidate these accounts you might be able to get better deals with credit and loans.

6. Go paperless. I resisted the whole paperless thing for a long time. I always worried that I would need that one piece of paper that I didn't keep! With tools like Evernote and Filethis, going paperless is really easy and efficient. Now I can search for any statement without going to a dozen different websites. Another couple of benefits of paperless is that it takes up less space and it's better for the environment.

7. Consolidate debt. If you have debt then try to have as few accounts as possible. Don't use the high interest debt consolidation loans! Try to use a reasonable zero interest credit card offer to consolidate. Just make after the offer expires that you aren't paying loan shark rates!

8. Consolidate investments and investment accounts. Think about having one account with a good advisor. Pick the advisor you have a good relationship with and move more money to him or her. This helps with getting lower fees and with less paperwork. Fewer statements and one consolidated 1099 at tax time. Once you have consolidated your accounts, consider fewer investments. Don't sacrifice diversification though! One good balanced account or target retirement date account will get the job done.

These suggestions are just a start. Implement them all or just a few to get your finances simplified.

We are all riveted by the story of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, which has seemingly disappeared off the face of the Earth. We can practically hear the fading satellite pings echo in our minds. We cannot help but wonder: How could something so enormous simply disappear into thin air?

What may be a disturbing mystery for us is an excruciating nightmare for the family members awaiting news. Outside a recent press briefing, 12 days after the plane's disappearance, relatives of the missing passengers were heard screaming, "Where are they? Where are they?" The futile response that came from the Malaysian authorities was that there was still no information about any of the passengers on the plane. The families' anger and protests, reported by many journalists, was an expectable initial response. This is true for any devastating and shocking news of loss. However, in the face of such uncertainty and confusion, the voices of protest linger.

Even as we write this, one of us turned to the other and asked, "Is it possible that the passengers will still be found?"

For the bystanders, this question stems from the fervent wish that the lost passengers could still be alive. For the family members who are waiting, not knowing is excruciating. Lacking concrete proof of their death, what can the family members do to cope? How can they begin to mourn their loss? How can they even accept their loss when even a thread of hope still remains?

Mourning begins with the awareness that an essential person has died. It is the slow and painful response to recognizing that someone we love is truly gone. We yearn for them; we imagine we can still hear their voice. Even as we begin to accept their death, we continue to deny the reality of the loss. As best as we can, we contend with the ongoing wish (and fantasy) that our loved one will be returned to us. Yet in the end there is no escaping the recognition that this is impossible. We must endure the daily necessary and painful reminders of their permanent absence.

To help us bear the unbearable, to accept what the mind refuses, we naturally turn to familiar and comforting rituals. In almost all cultures, the care, visitation and guarding of the body allow for a tangible goodbye, one in which we have seen our loved one for the last time. While some part of us still holds on to the hope that the deceased could be alive, through these rituals we come to know with certainty that death is absolute. Yet without the body -- the physical evidence of death -- the goodbye lingers on. The death remains an unanswered and unanswerable question. The what-ifs and the if-onlys cannot be put to rest.

The still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 is a story that continues to unfold before the world. With new information trickling in bit by bit, time seems elastic, and we observers are suspended as if in mid-air. In our imagination the missing passengers are still out there somewhere, waiting to be found. We are left with speculation and theories about what might have happened. Like the family members of the missing travelers, we are all holding out hope. We cannot help but envision the vanished plane concealed in a secret hangar, all passengers now perhaps prisoners of terrorists but alive, or perhaps they are stranded in a remote location, devising their own plan for rescue. Of course, such imaginings are fantastical and arise from our collective wish that this story will end with all passengers' safe return. For those who knew and loved the people aboard this ill-fated plane, these fantasies are painfully magnified, with the continued possibility that their loved ones could still, against all odds, magically reappear.

How, then, can the mourning process begin?

These family members need to know what happened on board Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. As the story begins to unfurl, as the pieces of the puzzle begin to make sense, the process of mourning will truly begin, both for the family members and for all the nations that have drawn together to search, to wonder and to support. In order to be able to say goodbye, we need to understand the full story -- no matter how painful -- the story of the flight that began, was disrupted and that, somehow, came to a devastating end.

අම්මලා තාත්තලා ගයාන්ගෙන් වෙන් වෙන්න කිව්වා. ඒත් මගේ තීරණය වෙනස්. මනුස්සයන් අතින් වැරැදි වෙනවා. මොකද ගයාන් කියන්නේ දෙවියෙක් නෙවෙයිනේ. මම ගයාන්ට සමාව දුන්නා. ප්‍රශ්න කතාබහ කරලා විසඳ ගත්තා. ආයෙත් මෙවන් දේවල් වෙන්නේ නැහැ කියලා ගයාන් මගේ හිසට අත තියලා දිව්රුවා. ඔය කාලයේදීමයි ගයාන්ට විවිධාකාර වූ චරිත රඟපාන්න ලැබුණේ. එන්න එන්න ගයාන් ජනප්‍රිය වුණා. ඔහු දියුණුව කරා ගමන් කරද්දී මං නිහතමානී සතුටක් ලැබුවා. ඒ තමයි අපේ ජීවිතවල වාසනාවන්තම කාලය. අපේ පුංචි පුතා දැන් හරිම හුරතල්. නිවාඩු දවස්වල පුතා ගයාන්ගේ අතේමයි. එක මොහොතක්වත් බිමින් තිබ්බේ නැහැ. නිදා ගත්තෙත් බඩ උඩ තියාගෙන. ගයාන් තිරයේ පෙම්වතා, දුෂ්ඨයා වුණත් ගෙදර ඉන්න කොට කොතරම් ආදරණිය පියෙක් ද කියලා අහල පහල අය පවා දැනගෙන හිටියා. එහෙම හිටිය ගයාන් මෙහෙම වෙනස් වුණේ කොහොමද කියලා මට හිතා ගන්නවත් බැහැ.

ගයාන් තවත් පෙම්වතියක් එක්ක පැටලිලා කියලා ආරංචි වුණාම මම ඒක හිතින් බැහැර කළා. මොකද කලින් ගයාන් වුණු පොරොන්දුව මට වගේම ගයාන්ටත් හොඳට මතක ඇති කියලා මං විශ්වාස කරපු හින්දා. ඒත් ඒ විශ්වාසය රහසේම පුපුරා ගිහිල්ලා. අම්මා කෙනෙක් වගේ ළඟින් හිටපු මට වඩා ගයාන්ට ඇයව ලොකු වෙලා. එතකොටත් අපේ කැදැල්ලට දෙවැනි පුතුත් ඇවිත්. අපි ඔක්කොමලා දාලා ගයාන් යන්න ගියා. මට පිස්සු හැදුණා. මං හිතුවේ මගේ ජීවිතය අංගොඩ මානසික රෝහලෙන් කෙළවර වෙයි කියලා. මම අපේ දරුවන් ගැන හිතුවා. ඔවුන් ගැනම හිතලා හිතලා බිදුණු සිතේ කෑලි පාස්සන්න උත්සාහ කළා.

ගයාන් අපට කළේ ලොකු වැරැද්දක්. ඒත් මං එයා ගැන තැන තැන වැරැදි කතා කළේ නැහැ. ගයාන් පිළිබඳ කිසිදු වෛරයකින් නෙවෙයි අදටත් මම ඉන්නේ. නඩත්තු නඩුවක් දැම්මෙ අපිට ජීවත්වන්න ඕනෑ නිසා.

මාසෙකට 40,000 ක් අපට ලැබෙනවා ඒ වන්දි නඩුවෙන්. අපි ඉන්නේ කුලියට. එතනට දොළොස් දාහක් දෙන්න ඕනෑ. මට රැකියාවක් කරන්න බැහැ දරුවො දෙන්නා නිසා. මගේ අම්මට ඔවුන්ව බලාගන්නත් බැහැ. අම්මා රෝගාතුරව ඉන්නේ.

ඇයි ගයාන් ඔයා අපිට මෙහෙම කළේ? වෙන් වුණත් ඉස්සර නම් ඔයා පුළුවන් වෙලාවන්වල ගෙදර ආවා. දවසකට සැරයක් කෝල් කළා. අපි ගැන හොයලා බැලුවා. කෑව බිව්ව හැටි ඇහැව්වා. දුක සැප විමසුවා. ඔයා අන්තිමේට කතා කළේ ගිය ජනවාරි 19. ඊට පස්සේ අපි ගැන හොයන උනන්දුව අඩු කළා. දැන් අපි කතා කරපුවාමත් ෆෝන් එක ආන්ස්වර් කරන්නේ නැත්තේ ඇයි ගයාන්? ඔයාට මෙච්චර ඉක්මනට අපේ රත්තරං පවුල අමතක වුණාද? පුතා ඔයා නැතුව හරිම සාංකාවෙන් ඉන්නේ. මට කතා නොකළට කමක් නැහැ. අඩුම ගානේ එයා ගැනවත් හොයලා බලන්න. මම දැක්කා ගයාන් ගැන විස්තරයක්. දැන් ගෙදර ඉන්න බලු පැටවුන්ට කවුරුන් හෝ මොනවා හරි කිව්වොත් කේන්ති යනවා කියලා. මට දුක අපේ දරුවන් ඒ බලු පැටවුන්ටත් වඩා පහලට වැටිලා නේද කියලා හිතුණා.

මං ගයාන්ට කතා කළේ අප්පච්චි කියලා. මං එහෙම කටපුරා කිව්වේ ඔහුටම විතරයි.

අප්පච්චි . . . ඔයාගේ දරුවෝ අමතක කරන්න එපා. මං දන්නවා ඔයා එදා වගේම අදත් හරිම කාර්යබහුලයි කියලා. ඒත් බබාලට කතා කරන්න පුලුවන් වෙලාවල්වල. නැත්නම් ඔයාට පව් සිද්ධ වේවි මේක ආදරණීය ඉල්ලීමක්. ඉල්ලීමකට වඩා ආයාචනයක්...

Sri Lanka shares edge up; Nestle, HNB gain

(Reuters) - Sri Lankan shares edged higher in light trade on Wednesday, led by Nestle Lanka Plc and Hatton National Bank PLC (HNB) despite foreign outflows as an impending U.N. Resolution on the country's human rights record later this month dented sentiment. The main stock index ended up 0.07 percent, or 4.41 points, at 5,912.05. Foreign investors were sellers for a fourth straight session, recording net sales of 274.2 million rupees worth of shares on Wednesday. Net outflows so far in 2014 stand at 4.16 billion rupees, and clocked 22.88 billion rupees in 2013. The day's turnover was at 641 million rupees ($4.91 million), well below this year's daily average of about 907.4 million rupees. Analysts said investor sentiment has been dented on concerns over the U.N. Resolution, which could have an impact on the country's economy. Many potential buyers in risky assets are staying on the sidelines awaiting clear direction. Nestle Lanka gained 1.99 percent to 1,950.20 rupees while Hatton National Bank rose 3.27 percent to 157.90 rupees. Earlier this month, Sri Lanka questioned the independence of the human rights office of the United Nations after the United States asked it to investigate violations by the Sri Lanka government related to the civil war. 1. Dividends are distributions by a corporation to its owners. Usually, what is distributed is money… cash. Occasionally, dividends are paid in shares rather than cash.   2. Many companies increase their dividends every year. These are "dividend growth" companies. They are the companies you want to own if you're following a dividend growth strategy. Many dividend growth companies are well-known names, what many would call "blue chip" companies. Stock prices are not an indicator of whether a stock is a dividend growth stock. Whether a company is a dividend growth company is a function of corporate policy and practice, not the market. Dividends are discretionary. How much to pay (if anything), and whether to increase the amount from last time, are decided by the company's management and board, not by the market.   3. The 5-year Rule simply says that a company must have raised its dividend for at least 5 consecutive years before I consider it as a dividend growth stock. A 5-year track record is certainly not the only evidence you might seek, but it is an important part. If a company does not have at least a 5-year streak of raising its dividends, I consider it ineligible for consideration as a dividend growth investment. I won't buy it. I want companies that are clearly devoted to keeping their dividend growth streaks alive and have the financial strength to do so. The 5-Year Rule helps me identify them.   4. Compounding means earning money on money already earned. Compounding accelerates the rate at which dividends accumulate, like a snowball rolling down a hill. The term for compounding dividends is "dividend growth rate"(DGR).The dividend growth rate is independent from the dividend yield. A company with a low yield may have a high DGR, and vice-versa.   5. A constant annual percentage increase in a company's dividends causes your dividend income to increase at a growing rate. This is called compounding. This snowball effect is the first layer of compounding in dividend growth investing. You can add a second layer of compounding that accelerates your dividend stream even faster. You do this by reinvesting the dividends. Your dividend income, which is growing anyway, grows even faster if you reinvest dividends.   6. Yield is one of the most common measurements in stock investing. Do you know what it is? Yield is the one-year percentage return on your investment from the dividend. The formula is Yield = 12 Months' Dividends / Price. Yield on cost is kind of like yield, except that instead of using current price in the equation for yield, we use the original amount spent. Yield on Cost = 12 Months' Dividends / Original Price. So as the dividend flow increases, the yield on cost goes up relentlessly.   7. The myth is that when the market does badly, dividends dry up. It just isn't true. The fact is that dividends and the market are independent from each other. Total Return = Price Changes + Dividends. There are at least three "softening factors" that you get from dividend growth stocks: steady incoming cash, smoother ride through bear markets and faster recovery times. All of these softening factors help you to hold on to dividend growth stocks during times of market turbulence.   8. It is very realistic and possible to create a portfolio that will return, in dividends alone, the historic total return of the stock market, and to achieve this in 10 years or less. This goal is known as 10 by 10: That means generating a yield on cost of 10% within 10 years of when you start the portfolio. The 10 by 10 goal is achievable because of two factors: The initial yields on the stocks you buy, plus the dividend growth rates of those stocks. For example, a stock yielding 5% when you buy it will reach 10% yield on cost in 10 years if it increases its dividend 7% per year. You can get to the 10% yield goal even faster if you reinvest dividends. All of the above is true even if the current yield of your portfolio flat-lines, as it probably will (due to the increasing dollar value of your portfolio). The yield on cost will continue to march relentlessly higher as your companies raise their dividends, and as you reinvest them.   9. The reasons why you should be a dividend growth investor are:   Dividends bypass the market.Corporate dividend policies rarely go haywire. Dividend investing can relieve obsession over market volatility. You partner with your businesses, sharing in its success over the long term. Dividends are real cash. It's cash in your pocket. Dividend investing provides ongoing feedback about your investment. A dividend increase can normally be interpreted as a positive sign that management has confidence in the company's prospects. The best dividend growth companies are outstanding businesses.It requires an outstanding business to increase dividends for many years in a row. Weak businesses simply cannot do it. Dividends increases continue even when stock prices decline. You do not have to sell the stock to get the dividend.
