The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles made school history this year when they went to the NCAA tournament for Division I play for the first time this year. To the applause of many at the school, the FGCU made it into the tournament.
On April second, FSU announced that the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education received a $1 million gift from the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). The NMSI is dedicated to providing resources to increase performance in science, technology, engineering, and math.
They noticed that the 21st century was showing a growing trend of students not ready to compete in these important intellectual fields by graduation. They come away unequipped and hence under qualified to take on the world ahead of them.
Within the theory of Possessions and Extended Self comes the idea that humans view their physical possessions, their intangible characteristics, their family ties, and their physical environment as all extensions of their individual identity. The closer the object or characteristic is to the corporeal body of the individual, the more tightly they construct that object as a part of their identity - for example, people view their manner of speech as more reflective of their personal identity than the city in which they live.
They had 10 losses on the season, nearly all of which were to unranked teams that didn't make it to the finals. Few people had high hopes of their ability to make it past the first round. It would be a miracle if they did. Miracles are real then, because they got through that first round without breaking much of a sweat.
The NMSI isn't the only one investing in the future of FSU. On March 20, Florida Hospital presented the school a gift of $2 million in support of the further development of FSU's College of Medicine.
They did this to the applause of their fans and the groans of tournament brackets everywhere. They came from nothing (virtually unknown in the Division I conference) to beating Georgetown.
The College of Medicine partners with Florida Hospital to train their medical students. Instead of operating a teaching hospital, the students work directly with the men and women already well-established in their fields.
The extra money given to the school can turn out to be a great investment for the hospital as they continue to work one-on-one with the upcoming talent in what can only be considered as a working interview. The more they put into the program, the better quality students they can offer jobs to.
As a note of caution, it must first be agreed that all marketing strategies are useless unless there is a good product. Consumers will never embrace a worthless product even if it has the best marketing in the world.
Much to the chagrin of San Diego, they were able to get their head in the game and pull out a win. They were doing the unthinkable.
Flying Colors offers their support in the form of Florida State apparel. The more branding the students and fans of this school do, the better noticed they will be.
They won the games they were supposed to lose, and made an impression and expectation in the minds of college basketball fans everywhere. You can be sure everyone will have their eye out to see if they make it through next year too.
This is true of all schools. When they garnish attention, they also garnish the gifts and marketing of those that believe in what they are trying to accomplish.
