Benefits of Eating Together As a Family

Life with young children is rather busy. Between home work, soccer practice, piano training and driving them all around the state, parents still have to go to work, get the laundry washing done, wash the vehicle, mow the backyard, take the dog to the veterinarian and still find a several hours to sleep.

Making supper and sitting down as a family often gets ignored in support of hurrying through a drive-through and wolfing down chicken nuggets on the way to the next lesson or errand. While it can be hard to find the time, eating together has lots of advantages. Listed below are 5 of them, along with some tips to make it happen.

Teenagers end up in less trouble. Studies have shown that teens that eat regularly with their folks not as likely to smoke marijuana or tobacco, drink alcohol, or suffer from depressive disorder. Participating in regular, casual communication during meals makes youngsters much more comfortable to approach you about challenging issues during other times. Youngsters are healthier. Fast food and junk food leads to obesity, and the trend amongst even small children is quickly growing. Eating dinner in your own home or at a restaurant that provides healthy choices is much better for everyone's health.

Children learn communication skills. During family dinner, put away the mobile phones, laptop computers and tablets. Young children spend time and effort communicating without really chatting, due to technology. During family dinners, you can have discussions about issues that matter and learn about each other's lives. Ask each member of the family to tell anything about his/her day. Everybody can practice good table etiquette. Bolting down a cheeseburger while driving in the vehicle doesn't help your child learn proper dining etiquette-which can be a problem when he gets older and has to show up at business meals! Eating together is a fantastic possibility to work on basic table manners-placing the napkin in your lap, using utensils appropriately, not yelling along with your mouth full. Modeling etiquette doesn't have to entail discipline and criticism-kids will mimic your good social grace with a little bit of gentle inspiration.

Taste buds are established and expanded. Eating together is a fantastic opportunity to try new healthy foods together. While your children may need to be exposed to a whole new kind of food several times, after awhile they'll expand their repertoire to include more than just mac-n-cheese. Steps to make it Happen? Eating together with your family require a bit of pre-planning and organization. Plan food items together on Saturdays and Sundays and grocery shop in advance. Treat the family to a meal at a nice bistro. No cooking-just good conversation. Teach older children how to prepare meals and put them in charge from time to time. Have some fast and simple recipes that you can select from during busy nights.
