Understanding and Overcoming Stress Headaches

By Reta Newbrough

If stress and tension are daily factors in your life, it's not surprising if you are subject to tension headaches. Stress can come in many forms, and not everyone is even aware of all the ways it can creep into your life. If you've taken on too many responsibilities, have a child who is a discipline problem, or have issues in your marriage, you may be under a great deal of daily stress. If you are beginning to have frequent headaches, it's time to take stock and see what needs adjusting in your daily life. Our goal with this report is to give you some ideas of proven steps you can take to eliminate stress headaches.

A lot of folks have found relief from their stress headache by getting (or giving themselves) a head and face massage. If you have someone else to do this for you, so much the better. Nonetheless, it isn't hard to massage your scalp and face yourself. Massage your fingers into your scalp using a kneading motion. Rub the temples, the area between your eyebrows and the forehead. Relax your whole body while doing the massage by inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly. If you have any tension in your jaw or face, relax it. There are also inexpensive scalp massagers that you can buy that can help you relax. Even though this scalp and face massage is a great way to get rid of a stress induced headache, it's a good idea to do this type of massage even when no headache is present.

Your diet may be related to your stress headaches. An allergy or sensitivity to a certain food could be causing the problem. If you have a wheat allergy, for example, you might feel better if you avoid gluten in all forms. Whether you have allergies or not, it may help you to eat more whole grains and less sugar and processed carbs. Vegetables, whole grains and fiber rich foods help to keep your blood sugar stable, so try to eat more of these foods. If you've never been tested for allergies, you may want to do this in case this is causing headaches or other symptoms. Even if your diet isn't the primary cause of your headaches, it can be helpful to eat healthier foods and avoid ones you are sensitive to.

If you can identify the triggers that give you stress and tension - resulting in stress headaches - you can make a determined effort to avoid the triggers. Naturally, we're not saying that this is always easy. But, it's a lot more pleasant than having frequent stress headaches. You have to be aware, also, that chronic stress can cause other health problems such as hypertension. You will benefit if you come up with methods to positively handle the main situations in your life that lead to stress. Perhaps it will be possible to avoid the stress related condition altogether. Regardless of what the stressful situation is, you can make a conscious decision to not let it trigger a stress headache.

Stress headaches are triggered by stressful and tense events. If you can recognize what these triggers are, you will be able to circumvent them. Sometimes this can be difficult. However, it's worth the effort to prevent constant stress headaches. Chronic stress can also lead to other health problems, such as high blood pressure. You can develop positive techniques to handle the most stressful situations that lead to stress headaches. In some cases, you may be able to avoid the situation completely. If the stress is caused by something you can't escape from, it's important that you adopt the mindset that you will simply not let it take control of you.
