Who Is John Frum? Burning Man 2013’s Link To A ‘Cargo Cult’ In Vanuatu

Each Feb. 15, residents of the remote island of Tanna in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu gather to celebrate an obscure holiday known simply as John Frum Day. Stories about the day’s origins are as copious as they are colorful -- as are the myths of who exactly John Frum is.
“'E look like you. 'E got white face. 'E tall man. 'E live 'long South America," one villager told Naturalist David Attenborough in his 1960s documentary series The People of Paradise. Sometimes portrayed as black, sometimes as white, Frum is nearly always depicted as an American World War II serviceman who will bring wealth and prosperity to those who follow him.
“John promised he’ll bring planeloads and shiploads of cargo to us from America if we pray to him,” a village elder told a Smithsonian reporter who visited the island in 2006. “Radios, TVs, trucks, boats, watches, iceboxes, medicine, Coca-Cola and many other wonderful things.”

Such devotion is a classic example of what we’ve come to know as the “cargo cults,” many of which sprung up across the South Pacific during World War II as American troops descended on some of Earth’s most remote isles by the boatload. While most of these “cults” have faded into obscurity over the years, the cult of John Frum remains as strong as ever in the 21st century.
His devotees gather in Tanna’s Sulphur Bay each Feb. 15 dressed in replica American military garb for a parade. They hoist the American flag into the air and lay flowers at a red cross, the sacred symbol of the John Frum movement, all in good faith that the messianic figure will someday return bearing gifts from the West.
Frum’s name was little  -- if at all -- spoken of outside of this isolated community of 28,000 until the popular Burning Man Festival chose “cargo cults” and the mysterious John Frum himself as the theme for the 2013 event, which concluded this Labor Day.

Our story begins in Melanesia during World War II. Thousands of American GIs suddenly descended on this South Sea island chain, bearing with them unimaginable riches: magical foodstuffs that never spoiled, inconceivable power sources. Just as abruptly the troops departed, leaving only broken, rusted Jeeps, crumpled beer cans and the memory of Spam. To the astonished eyes of the natives, this was a miraculous occurrence, and they yearned for the return of abundance. Accordingly, they built totemic sky-craft in an attempt to summon back these Visitors and their legendary leader, the man the Melanesians called John Frum. They had formed a Cargo Cult.
Some critics believe Burning Man’s wording of the cargo cult myth encouraged event-goers “to appropriate and misinterpret indigenous culture from that region,” as one Change.org petition argued.
“The theme announcement, with its unnuanced summation of the ‘cargo cults,’ frames American people as the technologically-superior benevolent savior-gods and native people as naive, wide-eyed primitives. It reinforces myths which justify colonialism historically and contemporarily.”
Undeterred, the event organizers called Frum “a dispenser of endless abundance and wielder of mysterious technologies,” and asked artists to consider three things: “Who is John Frum; where is he really from; and where, on spaceship earth, are we all going?” Given that prompt, this was the end result:

Here are 10 ways to protect your kidneys: 1. Limit your salt intake -- Too much salt is not only bad for your blood pressure, it's also bad for your kidneys. Many die of kidney disease, which can be partly attributed to a high salt intake and fondness for fish sauce, soy sauce, plain salt and salted fish. Even instant noodles, chips and nuts are teeming with salt. The problem with salt is that it encourages the body to retain water, and can increase your blood pressure (which damages the kidneys).  2. Don't load up on high protein foods such as meat and steaks --A high protein diet makes the kidneys work twice as hard. Pretty soon, your kidneys could get tired and some of the weaker kidney cells can die. A friendly reminder to people on a high-protein Atkin's Diet or South Beach Diet. The time-tested doctor's advice of moderation in everything will serve you well. Eat a balanced diet of rice, vegetables, fish and fruits and you can't go wrong. 3. Keep your blood pressure at 130/80 or lower -- If your blood pressure is above 140 over 90, this can cause kidney damage within five years. The kidneys are said to be "happiest" with a blood pressure of 130/80 or lower. To help control your blood pressure, you should limit your salt intake, reduce weight and take medicines for high blood pressure, if needed. 4. Keep your blood sugar below 120 mg/dl -- Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney failure. A person with uncontrolled diabetes for 5-10 years may develop significant kidney damage. Consult your doctor and keep your blood sugar under control with diet, exercise and maintenance medicines. 5. Drink 8 glasses of water a day -- Doctors usually advise people to take in 8 glasses of water a day, but this really depends on your age and condition. If you're sweating a lot and work outdoors, you may need to drink more than 8 glasses a day. However, if you are above 65 years of age, you may do well with just 6 glasses a day. Drinking enough water also prevents the formation of kidney stones. 6. Watch your intake of pain relievers and other drugs -- Taking pain relievers like mefenamic acid, ibuprofen and the coxibs (like celecoxib) for a prolonged period of time may cause kidney damage. Because of this, we should limit taking these medicines to only a week, or just take them as needed. For those with chronic arthritis, try to look for other ways to relieve the pain such as using a hot water bag, pain reliever ointments, or the safer paracetamol tablet.  7. Be careful with tests and procedures using contrast dyes -- Some tests, like CT Scans and MRIs, and angiograms, use a contrast dye which helps doctors delineate the organs better. The problem with such dyes is that they can cause kidney damage. To be safe, I would strongly advise you to consult a kidney specialist before undergoing such procedures.  8. Don't drink too much Vitamin C -- Excess vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can lead to the formation of kidney stones in predisposed individuals. If you need to take vitamin C, a dose of 500 mg or less is safer. 9. Don't rely on food supplements to protect your kidneys -- The above tips are so far the best tips to care for the kidneys. 10. Get a kidney check-up --Simple tests, such as a complete blood count, BUN and creatinine, and a urinalysis are the first screening tests for the kidneys. Finding a trace of protein in the urine can alert the doctor of possible kidney disease.  Bottomline is: Kidney diseases are expensive and difficult to treat. US Sends Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carrier USS Nimitz To Red Sea In Anticipation Of Military Strike On Syria

The USS Nimitz, a nuclear-powered multi-mission aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy, and other ships in its strike group including four destroyers and a cruiser, were rerouted to the Red Sea, in anticipation of a U.S. strike on Syria, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing U.S. defense officials.

The ships were ordered to move to the Red Sea, which lies between Egypt and Saudi Arabia and is connected to the Mediterranean Sea by the Suez Canal, as the Navy leverages its assets “to have them in place should the capabilities of the carrier strike group and the presence be needed,” a defense official told Reuters.
The ships do not have orders, as of now, to be deployed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, which lies closer to Syria, but another defense source who spoke to Reuters said, the Navy is trying to be “as ready as possible, should we be needed.”
The Nimitz strike group was slated to return to its home port in Everett, Wash., after ending its deployment in the Indian Ocean, where it was assisting U.S. operations in Afghanistan, but amid prospects of an imminent strike by the U.S. in Syria, U.S. defense officials decided to reroute it to the Red Sea, Reuters reported.

The U.S. Navy has six warships -- five destroyers equipped with cruise missiles and an amphibious ship, USS San Antonio -- stationed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, as part of preparations for a “limited” strike on Syria, according to another Reuters report on Friday.
The San Antonio has hundreds of Marines on board, but defense officials stressed that the U.S. did not have plans to deploy them on the ground if a military strike occurred, but added that the ship could provide a temporary base for special operations forces, and could also help in evacuations.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama’s decision to delay the strike to seek congressional approval was met with accusations of “indecision” and “confusion” from the Syrian government.
“It is clear there was a sense of hesitation and disappointment in what was said by President Barack Obama yesterday. And it is also clear there was a sense of confusion as well,” Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said in Damascus, according to news reports.
Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally in the region, offered support to a U.S. strike on Syria, if the Syrian people supported such a move.
“We stand by the will of the Syrian people. They know best their interests, so whatever they accept, we accept, and whatever they refuse, we refuse,” Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said in Cairo, on the sidelines of a meeting of the Arab League on Sunday, according to Al Jazeera.
