How Obstacle Races Could Help Wrestling Ability

By Rob Sutter

I remember watching wrestling as a new fan and being enamored by the abilities of others as they seemed to play out in front of me. I enjoyed the fact that these men and women utilized maneuvers that I never thought were possible and the matches that I matched were all the more exciting. It seems like even now there's an influx of athletes who simply want to show what they can do while inside of the ring. Obstacle races could help to bring these honed abilities to the ring.

Even though he is no longer employed by World Wrestling Entertainment, I'd be lying if I said that John Morrison wasn't one of the more thrilling athletes in the company at one time. He was able to utilize a variety of flips and maneuvers in order to take the surprise of people who watched him on TV or at live shows. Even though he may not have won a world championship, the fans liked him mostly because of the work he did in the ring. No one seemed to showcase as much vigor as him.

Morrison should give much thanks to the sport of parkour for the success he had in WWE. This sport which involves high levels of dashing and leaping fit his style like a glove for a hand, which made him put on better matches since his own flare was added. He has a style all his own and I have to believe that it will carry over to whatever wrestling promotion he works for currently. There are many great moves that he had during WWE and not many could keep up with Morrison.

Parkour is one of those events that leave me legitimately stunned and that's rare for someone like me, who has been exposed to wrestling in great amounts. The events that can help out on this matter could most likely be seen in obstacle races and I think that they could build the move sets of certain wrestlers. This stands as one of my few criticisms of the sport because I don't think enough wrestlers have extensive arrays of moves. Who's to say that events such as Spartan Race couldn't help on the matter?

Wrestling today seems limited overall but it seems like WWE is the prime suspect because of its worldwide appeal. Not many people are going to be happy with the shortened move sets but why is it that fans have to settle for them? It's possible that wrestlers have cut down their moves for the sake of safety, since it seems like the company is emphasizing that point quite a bit. Obstacle races have the potential to open up move sets but it's not a guarantee.
