The Resurgence Of Midwest Hiphop

By Brooke Nash

There is diversity in the mix of people that make the music industry vibrant. Genres have taken turns in claiming royalty at their peak, followed by the inevitable descent that leads to temporary hiatus. However, the types you hear are ever present, like midwest hip hop that alternately resurfaces to make more expressions known.

Back in the 70s, hip hop rose to recognition and has earned a following steadily through the years. It was different from the existing mix of rock out music wherein the audience can slam into mosh pits and in between headbanging to rock and roll or dancing to new wave. What defined the scene was the dominance of this culture around the 90s in Detroit, amidst rap battles and showdowns.

However, there has always been a misconception about the attitude that goes with living the music itself. People often interchange it with rap as if they are of the same essence. In truth, however, they are separate in thought but still thriving together to make the industry alive.

For some, rap is referred to as one of the many kinds of music. Hip hop on the other hand is embraced as a culture that defines a lifestyle. This may include the colorful splashes of graffiti, the defining fashion sense that lovers of this concept portray and even the form of expression seen in break dancing.

For fans who let the concept thrive in them, it is a lifestyle that is distinct from others but is also subject to improvement from misconceptions. Usually, what skeptics go against with are the use of profanity in earlier works produced from this genre. However, to look on the brighter side, it has contributed to the industry by means of introducing the mixing of song parts to come up with a piece that is a mash up of different works.

The midwest type resonates within people who enjoy rap music with substance. It has changed the landscape of the scene in bringing forth artists who are more discerning about society and taking part in the revolution of self expression. Through the change of approach in terms of hostility and immorality, others are slowly being open minded about its potential.

Now, songs from this sub genre are looked up to in the hopes of finding thoughts on social issues that will move a generation. It has brought back the glory of making music for change, and not for self glorification only. Artists are also taking part by being responsible about the meanings embedded in their songs.

The resurgence of midwest hip hop may be perfectly timed with the revival of old sub genres that are now making it into mainstream consciousness. However, what differentiates the present is the substance that is honed by the dominance of awareness on social change and the want to speak out to generations through a creative medium. Put simply, it is glorifying the essence of self expression in a meaningful form.
