Life History Of A Fused Glass Artist

By Adela Beasley

Many persons would like to know more about the inspiration that drives a fused glass artist. Contemporary art sculpture is, understandably, less well known that papier mache or oil painting. People are aware of this field but they lack knowledge on how valuable the work is and how much skill is required to produce the beautiful pieces that they see in magazines or exhibitions.

Artists sometimes have a hard time making money when they first start out. This fact, however, has not deterred those talented individuals who are truly interested in the genre. Some grow up in the ideal environment for nurturing their gift. Their parents may be sculptors, or they may be surrounded by friends who also like working with this material.

Young people gain a vast amount of knowledge when they have the opportunity to be mentored by those in their field who have experienced a lot of success. This training helps them to push themselves further and strive for excellence in their own lives. Mentorship has allowed several popular artists to excel.

Some artists who are working in this field now did not immediately gravitate towards this type of career. However their work in another field was not as deeply satisfying to them as their current vocation. The level of expression that they are able to achieve with their chosen medium allows them to achieve balance and this guides their decision to remain in the sector.

A fused glass artist may choose to work out of their own studio. This becomes a goal even for those who are just starting out. Younger artisans may lack the financial resources necessary to buy or rent a workspace. When they are at college, this is not a problem, since they can use the studios that are provided at their school.

Some artists are first introduced to this transparent medium when they are studying another art form. They become attracted to its versatility and the beauty they can create as light adapts to the contours of any object they create. This technique is versatile and can be used to construct immense sculptures or tiny objects. Three dimensional work by American masters has gained international recognition.

Some individuals quickly embrace the group approach. Doing this gives masters in fusing the opportunity to work alongside novices. Younger craftsmen are encouraged by being able to create a piece with someone who is far more experienced. They learn directly by watching them and are quickly corrected when their technique is incorrect. Many individuals who have decades of learning enjoy being able to teach like that.

A fused glass artist works in a medium that has exceptional qualities. Several have taught at colleges and universities and have even founded their own schools. Some like to create abstract forms while others focus on patterning things they see around them that have meaning to them. Whatever their theme, they all use skill and ingenuity to create astounding works of art.
