How to Handle Water-Damaged Carpet

By Kiel Myers

One of the hardest circumstances to face is water damaging carpet and other flooring coverings. This sitution is feared by householders and entrepreneurs. While there is not any standard procedure for handling each flooding scenario, business and property owners should do the primary cleanup or restoration of the damaged items, including carpet and rugs.

Each flooding requires a specific way of dealing with its effects. Handling water-damaged carpet requires a special type of solution. The solution should be based mostly on the following factors: the kind of flodding that took place and the water that affected the carpet.

In this post, I wish to discuss the best way to deal with carpet that is ruined by sanitary flooding.

When sanitary flooding influences your carpet at home, the carpet must be treated with a disinfectant after removing excess water. Many homeowners believe that carpet should be replaced after flooding, but this isn't usually the case in sanitary flooding.

There are just a few steps to take when restoring carpet in sanitary flooding. Here is your guide.

1. Traffic on the concerned carpet should be kept to the minimum level till the carpet is totally dry. Take note that the latex that put together the primary and secondary backings together is weakened when the carpet is wet. If there's unnecessary traffic, this may result in delamination. Drying should be done to fortify the latex.

2. The primary source of water should be cut off immediately after the initial damage has happened. It is also crucial to punch small holes in the drywall to allow standing water that has remained within the walls to be released. It is very impractical to start the cleanup and restoration efforts if the water source is not cut off.

3. Remove any furniture that would stain or damage the carpet.

4. Call in a restoration professional who can make an assessment of the extent of the damage on the carpet and work on restoring the damaged carpet and other items.

5. Water extraction should start straight away and the carpet should be completely dry within 12 hours after the damage. Failure to do so will lead directly to the development of one or two kinds of bacteria and fungi that might pose health risks. To prevent this condition, disinfectant should be used on the carpet to kill these dangerous organisms.

6. To speed up the drying process, the carpet should be removed from the tack strip and the padding should be discarded. Elevate the carpet and dry it using fans. You can use dehumidifiers if there is heavy humidity.
