Discover the Causes of Feline Urinary Tract Infection

By Geraldine Dimarco

What is cat UTI? Cat urinary tract infection is a condition where in the animal contracts an infection in his bladder, causing inflammation and oftentimes, severe pain. This can be treated fairly easily enough; however, when undetected and left on its own-cat UTI may lead to serious kidney problems and eventually death for the unsuspecting pet.

There are several causes of feline UTI. The problem with cats is that they disguise their discomfort pretty well so it is a challenge to determine if they are already afflicted with some sort of sickness or not. Nevertheless, you can know if something is wrong with them internally by unusual manner of urinating habits, pain, lethargy and if they scratch their bladder often. When you see this occurring, ask your vet to conduct a thorough examination as soon as you are able.

What are some causes of feline urinary tract infection that we must be aware of? We understand that UTI is commonly developed because of bacteria that have infected the cat's bladder. The urine is rife with so many harmful organisms and toxins that will damage the animal's internal system. Therefore, if you want a healthier cat, have him relieve himself frequently. Give him a lot of water throughout the day and encourage him to pee. Water flushes out pathogenic substances and bacteria you do not want inside your pet.

Bladder or kidney stones are also among the other causes of feline UTI. When the cat is served a diet high in minerals and magnesium, parts of the food cannot be digested properly and become deposits that bind together to form crystals, or as we now know it, bladder stones. These are very painful for the animal, especially in the event that they need to eliminate. Protect your pet from this painful experience by serving the recommended food plan with natural supplements that aid in their immunity.

If the cat is dirty, or if the place they are living in is very unsanitary-these also are major causes of feline urinary tract infection you must make an effort to manage. Remember, bacteria is not only ingested; they also are transmitted through the same opening wherein urine passes out of them. So if the area that you put your cat in is so dirty, it is a big possibility that germs will come into your car through their genital areas. Do your best to make the place as sanitary as you cam and don't forget to wash and trim your cat around his more sensitive areas.

Have regular trips to the vet to detect the onset of any sickness. Urinary infections are not fatal in nature but can cause serious internal problems when left untreated. The vet will most likely give him a urinalysis check-up which will show if there are crystals, blood in the urine. It will also show the pH level of the urine. Once the examination is completed, the correct diagnosis will determine the best course of treatment your pet can take.

In some cases there are congenital abnormalities that warrant surgery but generally, you can take easy steps to improve your cat's health. Learn more about your cats and enjoy a long and happy life with them as you do.
