Four Essential Puppy Training Tips for the Newly Minted Dog Owner

By Geraldine Dimarco

Yes! You finally got the puppy of your dreams! You've already been planning his life before he even stepped into your home. But hold on, aren't you forgetting the other aspect of owning a puppy? Yes, I mean house training a puppy what else? Playing with them is great fun but do not forget that you need to teach them the right behavior early on so they will grow up to happy and confident dogs. If you are new at this, it's alright--everyone was at one point. Here are four really helpful and essential tips to help you get started.

1. You need to set yourself firmly in the position of authority. The foundation of a healthy relationship with your dog is the correct view of both of your positions in the ultimate hierarchy of things. It's easy to be indulgent with a cute puppy-- but if you don't nip it in the bud, a domineering and bratty dog will be your future headache. Start teaching him how to submit to you by giving him simple commands to obey. Use a firm voice when you say 'Sit!' and gently push him down to that position. Once he understands that you are his superior other commands will be easier to teach.

2. Your puppy must be potty trained. One of the first things in house training a puppy is proper toilet manners for canines. Bring him outside to poop fifteen minutes after every meal. Choose a specific area for his discharge and walk around it until he finally unloads. Immediately praise him when he does. Follow up on this every day for two weeks and he will begin to understand. If he makes a mistake and you find dog poop or pee indoors, scrub the area clean with a deodorizer to mask the smell, lest he returns to reclaim his spot.

3. You need to socialize the puppy. Puppy training tips include socialization of the dog as early as possible. Ideally, the optimum time to do this is when he is a few weeks old until about three months of age. Introduce him to different kinds of people as well as other healthy and vaccinated animals. Take him with you on rides and busy places like malls and parks. A healthy, well-adjusted and confident dog is a result of effective socialization developed in his younger years.

4. You must have a reliable communication system which your puppy understands. Dogs, indeed most animals, understand what their human counterparts mean through the reward-punishment method. The tricky part is to do this as consistently each and every time. For example, he jumps on a couch and you scold him sharply. The next day, he jumps again and you make nothing out of it this time. This will confuse the puppy and result in a cloudy understanding of what you want from him. Be consistent every time.

Simple right? Puppy training tips just go on from here but these are the fundamental issues you need to deal with and the others will be easier. Make a commitment in training your puppy; it is fun and interesting. You will find yourself itching to get another one before long.
