North West London offers some of the best places to live.

By Monica Harold

London attracts a huge number of visitors every year, most of whom head straight for the city centre and all the famous landmarks. This area is vibrant, busy and open 24 hours a day, but there are great areas just outside the centre that offer plenty of things to do and see at a slightly slower pace.

Buying a place to live in the city centre is very popular, and the market remains strong, but there are some great locations in North West London too. This part of London is close to the Metropolis but offers a local community atmosphere that's nice to come home to.

Cricklewood is an area of mostly Victorian houses. Mainly a residential area, it was made famous by Eric Morcambe who said 'life's not Hollywood, it's Cricklewood!' As a working production house, Cricklewood Studios made horror movies and short pictures back in the 1930s, but now a retail park has been built on the site it once occupied.

Hampstead is a trendy part of North West London with great shops and lively bars. Its famous heath spreads out for miles with great picnic spots, jogging trails and paths for walking. There are also three swimming ponds which are open all year, and they're all great sunbathing spots. Kenwood House can be found here; this handsome English Heritage building hosts classical music concerts al fresco during the summer.

Little Venice is tranquil and lined with beautiful Regency houses. This little paradise can be found close to Paddington, so it may feel remote, but it's actually close to everything. The Grand Union Canal and Regent's Canal come together here so the area has plenty of waterside opportunities. There are cruises with the London Waterbus Company, a puppet theatre on a barge boat, and restaurants with views over the water.

Maida Vale has some impressive buildings in its post code. Red-brick mansion blocks, grand Victorian houses and Edwardian apartments can be found in this area lined with trees. The original John Peel Sessions were recorded in the nearby BBC Maida Vale Studios, which now records classical music. This is a great place to live and is popular with some celebrities.

As one of the most exclusive addresses of North London, St John's Wood attracts celebrities and the well-heeled. The houses are beautiful, large and expensive. Lord's cricket ground can be found here, this iconic venue hosts national and international matches. All Beatles' fans know that Abbey Road Studios is also in St John's Wood and the world famous crossing is there too. Other big names have also recorded here, from Pink Floyd to Kylie Minogue.

Primrose Hill is one of the most desirable addresses in North West London. The park has an impressive hill and offers a jaw-dropping view from the top. Around the park are residential streets, and a small shopping area with pavement cafes. London Zoo is just a hop and skip away, as is Camden Lock. The only problem with this dream location is the houses prices, which are eye-wateringly high. But even if you can't afford to stay here permanently, it's really worth a day trip.
