The Careful Handling Of Seismic Explosives

By Vicki Diaz

The investigation for seismic activity is ongoing in the world. It involves the search for precious substances, such as oil, natural gases and minerals. These substances all have an economical value. During the search, the workers and geographical experts will use various types of equipment. Some of which are quite dangerous, such as seismic explosives, that are necessary for removing rocks and other obstacles that prevent the team from reaching their goal.

The workers on site need to handle the explosive equipment, although a few experts in this regard may be in charge of the operation. The equipment, because of its purpose, is dangerous, and has been responsible for many deaths in the past. A few safety precautions need to be put in place, and all those involved should have had the necessary training in this regard.

When entering the blasting area, turn off devices containing radio frequency. This means that in case you are carrying cell phones or radio, it is absolutely mandatory to switch the off and leave them behind. Electric detonators get triggered when the bridge wire in the detonator is heated by electric current. Radio frequency will trigger electric detonators causing it to explode untimely.

Make use of static protection when handling electric detonators: These electric detonators are triggered when electric current passes through the bridge wire. The bridge-wire would resist the passing of electricity and generate heat, almost like a light bulb. However when this heat exceeds a certain temperature, the explosive can get triggered. Using static protection, you can safely transfer all of the unwanted electrical energy to the ground and away from the explosive.

Static protection saves lives. Electric detonators are set off if electricity courses through the small wire inside the detonator, called the bridge wire. This wire will, for a time, resist the electric current, and will release heat, similar to a light bulb. At some point, if this heat becomes greater than the critical temperature, the explosive will be triggered. If you use static protection the unwanted electrical energy inside the bridge wire will transfer safely to the ground. This will take the electricity out of the explosive.

Any kind of heat could be dangerous while in the presence of an explosive. This includes the heat of flames, or fire, from which the equipment should always be kept at a safe distance. The device should be kept in a cool and controlled environment.

A hard bump or jolt to the explosive device could be fatal. Careful transportation is therefore critical. The truck carrying the device should be in good repair, and capable of smoothly navigating uneven road surfaces. The equipment should be well secured, so that it does not move around, and should be closed with a fireproof and waterproof cover. The device will also not work well if it is wet.

Seismic explosives are needed during the search for important substances within the earth's crust, but their sensitivity should not be underestimated. With the wrong handling, they could detonate very easily, leaving many people injured or even dead. Safety precautions should always be taken seriously, and must be followed by all on the work site.
