By Esther Salazar

Folks from all over the United States and abroad love to visit Florida to get a break from nasty winter weather, to enjoy the sun and sand of the beaches and to experience a unique cultural blend that can be seen. Known for it's warm climate and sunny beaches, South Florida and its main city of Miami are particularly popular destinations. With the great variety of places to see in Miami, this city on the coast is a place that is not to be missed.

South Beach and Miami Beach are iconic locations in this coastal city and are certainly worth a visit, but a lesser-known spot to consider is Star Island. Located within Miami Beach, this artificial island contains a number of huge homes, many of which are owned by musicians, professional athletes and other celebrities. Many find this an interesting way to do a bit of sightseeing for free.

Oleta River State Recreation Park is great place for those who like to be active. Here activities such as kayaking, canoeing, swimming and biking are readily available. There are cabins for sleeping and grills for barbecuing for those who wish to stay a bit longer. Coastal water-based activities are available as well, including deep-sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling.

Cultural experiences are also readily available throughout the area. The city is home to a number of art museums that offer an impressive range of art from different periods of history and different locations around the world. Some of the better-known ones are the Wolfsonian Museum, the Miami Art Museum, the Lowe Art Museum and the Frost Art Museum. Another option is the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, featuring both indoor and outdoor displays in the main house and in the gardens themselves.

The cultural mix of this metropolitan area can be experienced in nearly any spot in the city. The well-known neighborhood of Little Havana offers a taste of Cuban life unlike any other place outside of Cuba itself, while Little Haiti gives tourists a feel of the Caribbean lifestyle that lies not far offshore.

Professional sports are well represented in Miami and one can catch a game of one of the three major sports. Football fans can watch the Dolphins play at Sun Life Stadium while followers of the National Basketball Association may wish to got to American Airlines Arena for a Heat game. Those who prefer baseball can head to Marlins Park to watch the Marlins, the local Major League Baseball team.

The one definite must see for many tourists is the renowned Everglades National Park. The swampland is famous for it's native alligators as well as vast numbers of other flora and fauna that one cannot find in other places. Taking a boat tour will provide a unique opportunity to view these plants and animals. It's also possible to go fishing, camping and hiking in the park.

These are just a few of the many places to see in Miami. Visitors to this southern Florida city will certainly not be left wanting for places to go and things to do in any time of the year.
