Creating Art With Marble Jewelry

By Liliana Mills

Gems aren't the only thing that gives jewelry a sparkling and shimmering effect. Marbles have been a preferred bead in the jewelry making business for decades for this very reason. The exquisite effect of shattered or "fried" effect creates unbelievable marble jewelry art.

Artists, over time, have also learned the heating and cooling process required in marble frying to create the desired shattering. By doing so, they have put together delicate and intrinsically unique displays of jewelry art. Many use the simple procedure of heating the marbles on their own home stoves.

More and more people are learning the art of jewelry making, and the personal touch involved in creating their own beads. Many such artists are cooking their own beads, which creates a unique, one of a kind, jewelry making experience. Artists are also choosing to fry unique marbles to end up with a piece that reflects their own personality and creativity

A few items should be considered before beginning the frying process. Marbles should be glass, not simulated plastic glass. Glass shatters, plastic melts. Also consider the type of result desired. A tiger's eye for example will create more than one color within, while one color will shatter into a brilliant display of glimmering light.

Turn marbles often when cooking. Medium to high heat can be used. Use a skillet big enough to accommodate marbles in one layer. The skillet should be completely dry without anything added for frying.

Never use cooking oil to fry marbles. Oil can spatter, and can cause the marbles to explode. The skillet should remain dry while the marbles are frying. They should fry 15-20 minutes. While the marbles are frying prepare a pot of ice water, deep enough to cover the marbles.

Amount of shattering results will always depend on how hot the marbles are when placed in the ice water as it is the process of going from hot to cold that determines the amount of shattering. For this reason allow them to fry for the required time. Only remove them and place them in ice water when they are ready.

If you are unsure how to fry marbles safely you can consult a professional, or buying them at a stores is also fairly easy. If you do it yourself, try not to bend over the pot too much and also refrain from pouring the marbles into the ice water. Lower them into the water by the utensil to prevent the possibility that one might burst and glass might go into the air. Set aside until they cool.

Once cooled, they are now ready to be placed in your favorite marble jewelry necklace setting, earring set, exquisite ring or bracelet setting. They may also be used as a charm, placed in a pin set or used to make decorative cell phone chains and accessories.
