Hurricane Protection For Windows Is Part Of Hurricane Readiness

By Liliana Mills

No one can ever be totally protected from a hurricane but there are things that you can do in order to cut down on the damage and one of those things is hurricane protection for windows in your home. It is important to try and protect them during a hurricane.

There are many things that can be done to ready yourself for the big one and you can start by protecting each single window of your home. Make sure though you pay no attention to the old rumor that putting tape on them will help you. Tape simply cannot offer any protection and is a waste of time.

If you want something that resists high winds you might want to install hurricane resistant windows. They are relatively good at resisting damage generally caused by high winds. However, they still are unable to withstand the highest of winds. If you do go with these they need to follow all the rules set down by the state you live in.

Probably the most popular thing about the resistant ones is simply aesthetics, they do not have any unattractive shutters and after they have been installed you do not need to be concerned about putting shutters up. However, these can be extremely expensive and unfortunately they are not totally resistant against the super high winds.

Storm shutters are often used for protecting the home from hurricanes. These are often installed at the time the windows are but they can be installed later. These are popular by a lot of people because they are easily installed and are less expensive than the hurricane resistant option. If you want to spend a little extra, they can be designed to accent your home, otherwise often times they are considered very unattractive.

Storm panels are another option you might consider. These are made of aluminum or steel and offer a lot of protection against high winds. You will either need bolts or some sort of bracket attached to your home in order for them to be secured tightly. You do not leave these up year round, they are only installed when there is a threat of a big storm.

The advantage of this type of protection is that they tend to be far less expensive than the shutters or the hurricane resistant windows. However, the disadvantage is that they really don't look very good are heavy and still somewhat expensive.

The final option that you often see homes and businesses using would be the plywood panel. If these are used they need to be a minimum of five eighths of an inch it their thickness. They do protect quite well as long as you put them up correctly.

Plywood of course in the end is the least expensive item to use but one of the biggest disadvantages of it is the fact that you really cannot buy it ahead of time due to the fact that it could end up being rotten by the time you need it. Because of this, often when you do need it, hardware stores could run out of it before the storm hits. Another disadvantage is that the wood is heavy and can be hard to put up.

No matter what you decide upon, it is important that you do have some sort of hurricane protection for windows in your home. None of them are going to be perfect but it is important that you decide upon something to be prepared for the next storm.
