How EA Could Be the Target of Commercial Debt Collections

By Rob Sutter

The gaming world is seen by people like me as an escape from the hardships that the real world presents. I don't think that there's a single gamer that hasn't had a bad day and taken his frustrations to the gaming world in order to escape through there. No one wants to go home and undergo more stress, do they? With one video game entity in particular - EA - I don't think that the usage of commercial debt collections is too far from what could be done.

The story is as follows: EA had just put out "SimCity" on store shelves, releasing it to the public. The problem is that many negative reviews came about by gamers, a few of them stating that the game felt too confined and didn't allow for much growth. For most, though, this was the least of their problems as they would be kicked off of the servers that EA instilled. This bit of news leads me to the discussion of always-online gameplay, which I detest.

Let's say that your Internet connection goes in and out constantly; chances are that you will not be able to pay EA's newest title. SimCity isn't a multiplayer experience, either, so why is it that the company would put servers in a game where you only play by yourself? The truth is that this DRM is used constantly to combat piracy but, in my experience, people always find a way around it. People who pay money for these games to legally attain them are being punished.

I don't think that anyone is going to blame the person who paid for this for feeling ripped off. They don't want to put up with these terrible business practices and I think it's an opportunity for commercial debt collections to be seen. EA is noteworthy, without question, and while it may have many franchises to its name, it still has to abide by the rules that publishers have played by for decades. If not, it may be time for agencies such as Rapid Recovery to act.

I am not the kind of person who is fully content with buying a game in the digital sense. While I understand that it allows for less space to be taken up and it can be accessed quicker in most cases, it never feels as though I own the game. Rather, it feels like I'm being loaned a game for an extended period of time until the service which offers it is no longer in activity. However, there are services which seem to abuse the customer more so and hopefully collection services take effect.
