The Ultimate Guide To Repairing

Water Damage and Foundation Repair

The foundation of a house is like the root of a tree; it's the main part that helps keep the rest upright. Whenever any kind of weaknesses start to affect the foundation, the entire structure will then be in danger of collapse. One of the main culprits in weakening housing foundations is excessive water, which can be the result of various factors. If you notice a problem that might lead to structural damage, you must get your foundation repaired immediately in order to save your home.

Whenever there is a problem with your home's foundation, you will most likely be able to trace it to the effects of water damage. Very often the soil surrounding the foundation walls will trap and hold water, creating extra stress that breaks the walls down. Doors and windows might not close evenly or become stuck; floors may start to drop in areas; walls may start to bow or crack. Before the damage to the foundation walls spreads to the rest of the structure, an experienced foundation professional should be called to correct the problems and reinforce the walls. Should the damage indeed spread to the rest of the structure, in addition to foundation repair, you may also need to have the appropriate professionals address these issues.

Many people have tried to waterproof their foundation walls, believing this will be sufficient enough to prevent major water damage. However, waterproofing cannot do much to prevent the pressure caused by heavy summer flooding, or the stresses from the autumn to winter freezes. This is what causes the most damage, the extra force and pressure that is added to the walls, weakening them increasingly over time. As such, the problem will really only be solved with proper foundation repair work instead.

It is not always easy to see some kinds of foundation damage. Sure, when the walls are cracking, or when doorways are no longer level, then you can get a better idea that something is wrong. However, sometimes the walls will start to bow, which sometimes can only be seen at certain angles or when very extreme. Your best bet will be to call in a foundation repair professional whenever you experience heavy rains or floods, or if there is a lot of precipitation before or during the winter months.

It is understandable that some people may feel that a foundation repair professional will be too expensive, given the present economic recession. Yet, the cost of not knowing if there is a problem, or worse, not doing something about it, will end up costing an incredible amount more. It really does not pay to be reactive in this situation, as you may one day be reacting to a collapsing home. You should take as much time as needed to learn all you can about foundation repair and the different techniques you could use to protect your home's structure.
