1994 පැවති මහ මැතිවරණයෙන් එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය පරාජය වී පොදුජන එක්සත් පෙරමුණට බලය හිමිවීමෙන් අනතුරුව 2001 වසරේදී යළි මහමැතිවරණයෙන් ජය ලබන අතර රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ යළි අග්රාමාත්ය ධුරයේ දිවුරුම් දුන්නා. 2004 මහ මැතිවරණයෙන් පරාජයට පත්වන ඔවුන් 2010 සහ 2015 ජනාධිපතිවරණවලදී පොදු අපේක්ෂකයෙකුට සහය පළ කළා.
2015 ජනාධිපතිවරණයෙන් පොදු අපේක්ෂක මෛත්රීපාල සිිරිසේන ජයගැනීමෙන් අනතුරුව යහපාලන ආණ්ඩුවේ අග්රාමාත්යවරයා ලෙස යළි දිවුරුම් දෙන්නේ එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂ නායක රනිල් වික්රමසිංහයි.
 අග්රාමාත්ය රනිල් වික්රමසිංහගේ නායකත්වය යටතේ එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය පසුගිය අගෝස්තු 17 වනදා පැවති මහ මැතිවරණය ජයගන්නා අතර, ඔහු සිව්වන වරටත් අග්රාමාත්ය ධුරයට පත්වුණා.
එසේම නිදහස් පක්ෂය සමඟ සම්මුතිවාදී ජාතික ආණ්ඩුවක් සඳහා දැන් එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය ගිවිසුම් අත්සන් කර තිබෙන්නේ නව දේශපාලන සංස්කෘතියක්ද රටට හඳුන්වා දෙමින්.

“ගෙවී ගිය දශක 5-6 ක කාලය තුළ එජාපය හා ශ්රීලනිපය මැතිවරණ හා අතුරු මැතිවරණවලදී කළ විරෝධතා, උද්ඝෝෂණ වලදී ජීවිත කොතරම් නම් විනාශ වුණාද? මේ දේශපාලනයෙන් මෙතෙක් කොයිතරම් ඇන කොටා ගැනීම් ජීවිත හානි සිදුවුණාද? අපි අලුත් රටක් විදියට අලුත් දේශපාලන සංස්කෘතියක් ඇති කිරීමට එජාපයත් ශ්රීලනිපයත් අත් වැල් බැඳගෙන ඉන්නේ අපිට නොගැලපෙන නුසුදුසු දේ ඉවත් කිරීමටයි. මම ඉතාමත් සතුටු වෙනවා රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ අගමැති තුමා සමග එකට ආණ්ඩුවක් කරලා එකට ගමනක් යන්න ලැබීම ගැන.

ජනවාරී 5දා රාත්රී මරදානේ පැවැති අවසන් ජනාධිපතිවරණ ප්රචාරක රැලියට ආරක්ෂක හේතුන් මත නොයන්නැයි දන්වා ආරක්ෂකයින් හා රියදුරන් තමා නිවසේ තනිකර ගිය අවස්ථාවේ රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මහතා සිය නිවසට පැමිණ තමාව රැස්වීමට රැගෙන ගිය අයුරු ජනපති මෛත්රිපාල සිරිසේන මහතා අද හෙළි කරන ලදී.
ඒ සිරිකොතදී අද පෙරවරුවේ පැවැති එජාප 69 වැනි සංවත්සරයේ ප්රධාන ආරාධිත අමුත්තා ලෙස සහභාගි වෙමින් කළ කතාවේදීය.
ජනාධිපතිවරණ මැතිවරණ ව්යාපාරයේ අවසන් දවස වූ 5 වැනිදා තමන් ඇඹිලිපිටිය, කළුතර, මොරටුව ඇතුළු රැස්වීම් ගණනාවකට සහභාගි වී නිවසට පැමිණි බවත්, එදින තමන්ට සහභාගිවීමට තිබූ අවසන් ප්රචාරක රැලිය සංවිධානය කර තිබුණේ මරදානේ බවත්, ජනාධිපතිවරයා පැවසීය.
කෙසේ වුවද අනෙකුත් රැස්වීම් සියල්ල අමතා නිවසට පැමිණි තමාට ආරක්ෂක හේතුන් නිසා “සර්” මරදානේ රැස්වීමට කිසිසේත් ගෙනයාමට නොහැකි කියා, ආරක්ෂකයින් හා රියදුරන් තමන් නිවසේ තනිකර ගිය බව ජනාධිපතිවරයා කියා සිටියේය.
එම අවස්ථාවේදී රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මහතා “මරදානේ රැස්වීමට ඔබතුමා එනකන් අපි බලාඉන්නවා” දුරකථන ඇමතුමකින් දැනුම්දුන් බවත්, ඒ වන විට ආරක්ෂකයින් හා රියදුරන් කිසිවෙකුත් නැති නිසා තමාට මරදානට ඒමට නොහැකි තත්ත්වයක් ඇති බව කියා සිටියේ යැයි මෛත්රිපාල සිරිසේන මහතා පැවසීය.
එහිදී අගමැතිවරයා කවරෙකුවත් අවශ්ය නෑ මම ඇවිත් ඔබතුමා රැගෙන යන්නම් කියා තම නිවසට විනාඩි කිහිපයක් තුළ පැමිණි බවද, ඒවන විට රවී කරුණානායක මන්ත්රීවරයාත් පැමිණ සිටි බවද, ජනාධිපතිවරයා කියා සිටියේය.
