Merits And Demerits Of Portable Silos

By Doris Rivas

A silo is defined as a large storage unit that can accommodate tones of just about anything. It can range from food grains to liquids; a silo is more than capable of handling the load. They are just storage units and are not meant for processing purposes. Portable silos are basically any storage unit that can be transported rather easily as opposed to stationary models that are rooted to the ground.

Efficiency and convenience are two major advantages of a silo. Being usable in many industries as a transportable silo offers producers an opportunity to move materials long distances. They can also be rooted firmly to an industrial site and serve distribution purposes. On the other hand, they can be carried between different job sites.

Most movable silo units are manufactured in not just one size. They are preferred through numerous industries for their transportability and storage capabilities. Those industries that need larger units for only simply transport, can make use of stationary models while others can use movable types. Nevertheless, portable units are always made for easy dismantling and assembly.

Digital displays, printers and weighing machines are just a few of the things that are today fitted into portable silo units. They ensure that manufactures can measure matter inside. Moreover, it allows proper discharge of substance over time ensuring a steady production while always displaying total remaining content left behind in the silo.

As technology advanced, so did the form of a conventional portable-batch plant. Previously such plants were usually considered highly labor intensive. Today, they are self-erecting plants that require very little guidance from workers. The plants are quick to dismantle and are simple to transport over long distances. They can be erected in under minutes, ready for operation.

Since movable batch plants need to be transported more often, they have to be provided with wheels. The batch plant usually consists of frame-mounted wheels at the front and the back such that they remain disconnected when erect. During transportation, the wheelbases are connected together and provide a sturdy surface for movement. Such on the go containers have to be constructed using heavy duty materials and should be firm in their structure. They must also be compact to fit onto trailer trucks and other vehicles.

There are some disadvantages of such movable units though. Firstly, they are not as strong as a stationary batch plant and neither can they be fitted with precision instruments since travel tends to disorient them. Secondly, most movable batch plants are small and hence cannot be used continuously. Finally, a batch plant that can move will always require specialized workers.

Portable silos are excellent in terms of productivity but they are poor when it comes to security needs of manufacturing plants. Because of their easy portability, they are easy to steal. However, in return, they offer a chance to be quickly dismantled, moved and used or reused in more than one production process.
