Use The Mat Board Cutter Properly

By Sharlene Fleming

The mat board cutter is something that every artist ought to have. This is essential in order to sell more of their arts. Choosing the right materials is vital for business expansion. For a cleaner cut, you have to use the right cutters on your work. When using the cutter, you have to be wary of several mistakes that may ruin the artwork.

One of the most common problems an artist may face is over cut. This occurs when the blade has cut so deep into the board that it may have included a portion of the artwork. This normally happens when the blade has been positioned wrongly. Another possibility is when the blade has not fully cut the mat as desired. This is known as undercut. Undercuts may lead to jagged or uneven inside corners.

There are other instances when the blades start to follow a different path. It may have strayed out of the line that you laid out earlier. This condition is called the wings or cutting outside the corners. This is usually caused by deep cuts that cause the blade to bend towards the external parts of the materials.

Duller blades may cause problems as well. If the cutters are not sharp enough, its cut are uneven. The results may not be visually appealing. If the cutter has become duller, make sure to replace them with a sharper one right away. Some of the factors that can affect the sharpness of the blades are the quality of the boards and the utilization of the blades.

Cheap boards may worsen the matter. Some may think that they can save money if they buy mats with poor quality. They do not know the graveness of this mistake. The quality of the mats can affect the outcome of the cuttings, which can influence the overall quality of the artwork. This means that you lose more than what you thought you gained.

Some artists may try to cut more than one mat at a time. Bundling two or more mats makes it more difficult to cut them. If you insist, you can only get inconsistent cuts. Slight movements of the board may affect its incisions. If you put the mats together, the problem may get even more apparent.

The clamp marks are another unwanted blemish that may cause degradation to the materials. The clamps are used in board cutting machines to hold the mats in place. This also prevents the blade from slipping or shifting. When the blades slip, not only the boards are cut, but even the materials can be ruined.

Using the wrong board or cutter may also lead to jagged cuts. The uneven edges may destroy the value of the entire work. To avoid this, you have to make sure that you use the right cutters and the proper boards. The backing sheets can also help keep the cuts smooth.

Even the blade's angling also matters. The mat board cutter must be tilted at forty-five degrees for a better outcome. Keeping the proper angle is difficult, though. Let alone the inconsistencies in the materials. To be safe, it is highly advisable that you use the right cutter at all times.
