Discover the Best Natural Dog Flea and Tick Control

By Geraldine Dimarco

It is said that everything in the world has a purpose - I'm still finding what that is for fleas and ticks. These pesky little vermin are not life threatening, but they make life a lot more challenging to the poor dog and the owner as well. We never want to douse our pets with chemicals as much as possible; so here are several natural flea repellant for dogs you can try at home.

Natural dog flea and tick control can begin in their diets. That's right - what they eat can help keep the fleas at bay. Did you know that garlic repel more than just your date? A moderate amount, grated on your dog?s dish, will make your pet taste unpleasant to the clueless flea. Boost their immunity by Omega-3 fatty acid and B complex supplements, apple cider vinegar and saffron oil. Check with your vet as to the most appropriate dosage for your dog.

Apple cider vinegar diluted in water is a good alternative to ward off the ticks. They hate the taste and smell of this on their hosts. If your pet doesn?t like apple cider vinegar, try rosemary essences. It produces the same effect on the fleas.

A citrus spray is also natural flea repellant for dogs. Get the juice of four large lemons and blend it in half a quart of water. Spray over your dog's fur, taking care not to spritz over the face. Essential oils like lavender, cedarwood, lemongrass, tea tree and geranium can be dabbed on the dog?'s collar or rubbed behind the ears, around the tail and on his joints. Take note that cats are a different matter and they do not do well with essential oils.

Your furniture are more infested with fleas than the actual animal. It is vital that you make your home as sanitary as you can. Vacuum all your carpets and upholstery, then sprinkle regular table salt or crushed rosemary leaves over it. After leaving it overnight, vacuum thoroughly the next day. Throw the contents of the vacuum bag outside afterwards.

Carefully wash the dog's beddings. Put a few drops of eucalyptus and citronella oil as you rinse it out. Use the sun's heat to dry it out. When you do find a tick, do not crush it immediately. It carries with it harmful bacteria that cause infection. Douse it with alcohol or if it is unavailable, wrap the flea in tissue first before flushing it out because fleas do not drown.

Hot and humid seasons breed more of these organisms. Be extra vigilant and bathe your pets often during the summer months. Run a fine tooth flea comb through his coat regularly and inspect for fleas whenever time permits. Remember, some of these fleas carry diseases like Lyme disease, heartworm, ehrlichiosis and babesiosis - so the extra precaution will be appreciated by your pet.

The best natural dog flea and tick control remedy is to simply make sure your pet is as healthy as can be. Keep the dog and his environment clean, feed him a nutritional diet and prevent stressful situations that may weaken the animal's immune system.
