Utilizing Different Styles Of Containment Berms

By Christi Larsen

Maintaining a hazard free work environment is a key step in providing a safe place for all employees. In an emergency situation, certain measures are taken to protect those in the general area from coming in contact with danger or contaminates. One of the most common ways these goals are met are by the use containment berms that are designed to handle numerous issues.

Nearly any type of spill can be contained by using some form of this tool which is available in various sizes, styles and shapes. Companies that handle risky materials regularly use these items as precautions. Many government agencies on all levels will also use them whenever there are accidents that may endanger the public.

Berms come in a variety of styles so that they may be adapted to fit just about any situation that may call for their use. Some are of rigid design and meant to handle rather specific needs, while others are more flexible and can be quickly adapted to each unique spill. They can be used on a daily basis as a means of prevention just as easily as they can be deployed for emergencies.

OSHA has directives in place that requires certain types of industrial businesses to utilize specific containment systems in different areas of their operation. For instance, drums that are prone to leaks or contain hazardous materials will have to be stored on pallets that are designed to handle potential issues of this type. The berms are made with drainage ruts that lead to compartments to hold all liquids that may spill out.

There is even a specialized spill barrier that is meant to be used to protect the flooring when vehicles are parked and stored. The motorized machines are basically rolled onto a giant industrial strength tarp that has raised edges. The point is to catch any liquids such as oil and gasoline, that may leak out and keep it from being soaked into the ground and causing environmental issues.

Some of these are formed like solid sections of wall in various heights, lengths and weights. They can be used in any number of situations such as when rivers are expected to overflow their banks in heavy rains, or when sand or dirt needs to be contained within a confined space. This type is easily loaded on trucks and transported to wherever they may happen to be needed at any given time.

Occasionally there are those spills that are of an uneven nature and can not be contained by rigid means. In cases such as these, crews may opt to utilize flexible, inflatable tubing type barriers that can be formed into virtually any shape necessary. They are made to fit snugly to the ground, even when the terrain is less than even, and can be filled to whatever height is required for the situation.

This is just a small sampling of containment berms of many types that business and organizations everywhere use on a regular basis. They come in so many styles, each intended to help contain spills and lower contamination risks. Whether used as daily preventative means or only in unique situations, there is a model that can help get the job done.
