Why It Is Vital To Use Containment Berms When Working With Harmful Fluids

By Jill Faulkner

There are many types of pollution but the spillage of toxic liquids must rate as one of the worst possible scenarios. Spillages can cause a sudden and deadly crisis for humans and animals and it can contaminate the soil to the extent that it would be poisoned for years to come. The use of effective preventative equipment such as containment berms are not only highly advisable, but are required by law in most places.

Most liquid or semi liquid spills require more than one approach to containment and an eventual solution. A final solution can only be claimed if the toxins are safely removed and if no permanent damage occurs. Barriers are only the first step in dealing with spills. They can contain the harmful liquid but thereafter it needs to be dealt with and removed.

This equipment is specifically designed to physically contain fluids. However, they are not always used in isolation. Spillage in a large body of water, such as a lake or the ocean, can be contained by the equipment but it is also necessary to get rid of the unwanted fluids. This is often done with biological agents that are designed to accelerate the natural biodegrading process.

One of the latest and most effective ways of dealing with contained toxic fluids is to introduce a solidifying agent. These agents are specifically engineered for this purpose. They utterly absorb the unwanted fluid and become a sold mass that can be removed safely and without too much effort. The resultant mass is often used in manufacturing rubber products and in asphalt projects.

There are various other methods of dealing with pollutants contained by a barrier device. In some cases it is possible to simply vacuum the liquids into a large container for safe disposal elsewhere. In certain instances it is possible to use special machines to separate the water and the contaminant and to then skim the pollutants from the water.

It is not always possible to expend the same amount of effort and money on all spills. That is why areas are prioritized in terms of the way in which pollution will be handled. Areas that are home to sensitive fauna and flora always receive a very high priority. Tourism hot spots are also high on the list. Isolated shorelines that have wave activity are often seen as a lower priority.

Modern technology ensures that it is possible to deal with spills effectively. This can only be achieved, however, if the necessary manpower and equipment is available and if somebody accepts responsibility for the cost of the operation. The best solution is to be prepared for any eventuality. Anybody that deals with toxins and harmful chemicals should be ready and equipped for calamities.

The importance of doing everything humanly possible to prevent the spillage of harmful chemicals and toxins simply cannot be overstated. Every single person dealing with these substances should be trained in handling spills and companies should take preventive measures. Equipment such as containment berms should be available at all times.
