Decorating 101: Elements Your New Kitchen Needs

By Vickie Daeley

If your kitchen feels a bit dated and you want to begin redesigning this space, there are many considerations you will have to make along the way. This includes everything from wood choices to updating appliances and much more. When you do a kitchen remodel, don't forget to think about the following.

The easiest way to tackle a kitchen redesign is to hire a professional interior decorator. Not only will this professional have great ideas, they will know how to create a detailed plan and execute all of the elements you desire into that plan. In addition, a designer has great contacts in the design world so you will find the best quality appliances, carpentry and painting services by using a designer and often at lower prices than you might be able to find yourself.

One of the big mistakes people make when setting up any room in a house is not having enough lighting, not taking advantage of natural lighting and not directing artificial light correctly. This is very important in a kitchen, as it is a working space where you need to be able to see what you are cooking. Your designer will be particularly helpful in this area, because getting the lighting just right is definitely not a simple process. A trained professional can make all of the difference.

A kitchen is a space where one must work to prepare meals, so there needs to be a good workspace as well as a place to put pots, pans and other cooking essentials. A good kitchen design includes an uncluttered work surface that is large enough and convenient. If your kitchen is small, this can be tricky, but a designer can be very helpful in pointing out how moving cabinets or appliances can create a workstation. You also can make a kitchen look larger by choosing materials that are lighter in color.

Typically, the best rooms have just one central point of focus. In a kitchen, it might a fantastic oven or perhaps an amazing pot rack. While every kitchen does need a special element, don't add multiple elements as this will look cluttered and confusing. This doesn't mean that you can't have plenty of great features. Every item you select, from the knobs on the cupboards to any artwork you place on the walls, can be wonderful accents.

When it comes to appliances, stick to one basic style, such as all stainless steel, all white or all black or perhaps consider a built-in refrigerator and dishwasher. It is important to do some research on the quality and cost of each appliance, but your designer will definitely have some suggestions, as he or she has designed many kitchens and knows what brands work to make clients the most satisfied.
