Spill Containment Pallets Protect The Environment From Hazardous Materials

By Christi Larsen

The rising incidence of contamination of the environment due to improper handling of harmful substances has raised concerns internationally. Harmful substances are entering ecological systems and causing lasting damage. Regulations have been put in place to help prevent such incidents. Spill containment pallets help make sure that every possible precaution is being taken for safety of workers and the environment.

It makes sense to comply with these regulations. The problems which come with non-compliance may be extensive. Just consider the consequences of leakages. They have the potential to make the workplace unsafe, run out into the drains, and worse, affect whole ecosystems by leaking into ground water. A serious incident in a factory would mean shutting down production altogether and undertaking extensive clean up operations, all of which is very costly.

The size of pallets varies considerably from those that can contain only one drum to much larger ones that can contain many. Choice will depend on the size of the containers being used. There are regulations as to what size pallet needs to be used with what size container to make sure that spill is contained. It is recommended that the pallet must have an additional twenty five percent capacity than the barrels it is supposed to hold. This would mean that a pallet with a sixty gallon sump capacity is required to hold a fifty gallon container.

These products must be strong enough to contain large weights but also light enough to maneuver. This is why they are made mostly of materials like polyurethane and high density polyethylene. These materials are not only lightweight and durable but they are not easily damaged by the toxic chemicals they have to contain.

There are many different styles of these secondary containment products available today to suit all kinds of different situations. There are those which can be stacked on top of one another which are suitable where much storage is needed in a limited amount of space. There are some which are covered and can be used outside. Modular platforms are available which can be expanded if necessary. Portable products are available which are compact so they store easily on a shelf for when they are needed. These are an economical alternative.

Sturdy, removable grates are found on most of these products. They are thick for superior crack resistance and can be removed for quick sump inspection and easy cleaning. Captured spills are often reclaimed for further use, thus saving costs.

Using these products also helps to protect workers. They benefit from not having to be exposed to harmful spillage. They are also not as likely to be injured by slipping on materials which have leaked onto the floor.

Although spill containment pallets are used mostly by large factories, they need to be used by everyone who handles potentially harmful substances. Even if the amounts being handled seem insignificant, they can still cause damage. Vigilance is required to make workplaces as safe as possible and to prevent any further damage to our environment by careless handling of these hazardous materials.
