Recipes for Dog Treats

By Geraldine Dimarco

If you're reading this you probably have a pet. I would venture to also say that you are probably a very good master because you are taking the time to find out how you can improve your pet's quality of life in however way you can. Well, you've come to the right place. To answer your question-one of the best ways to have a happy pet is making him healthy and delicious homemade dog treats.

You know sometimes the word "homemade" scares people when it shouldn't. Really, it's not intimidating at all. If you can be in the kitchen without burning yourself, you can make canine food fairly easily. There are numerous recipes for dog treats that you can find in the Internet today. In fact, you can surf the web for these right after reading the article. So, what is it we need to know about canine recipes?

Well, one of the first things you need to check is the ingredients that will be included in the meals. Dogs can usually eat the same fare as we but there are some food substances that are very dangerous to them. When they consume large amounts of these harmful ingredients they can be subject to very painful and sometime terminal health conditions.

Download a list of these harmful ingredients and take the required steps to ensure that it doesn't enter your dog's system. Examples of these ingredients are caffeine, chocolates, alcohol, baby food, cat food, onions, raisins, grapes and macadamia nuts. If the recipe calls for them, disregard or make the adjustments needed.

What's good about creating homemade dog treats (as opposed to pre-packed dry kibble) is that it can be as interesting as you want it to be. You can boil meat like chicken, liver or beef in garlic-infused water and slice them up, ready for feeding. How about preparing doggie biscuits with a spoonful of peanut butter on them for that extra yum factor?

When preparing these treats, make it as easy to eat as possible. What do I mean? Chop up the snacks in little pieces to make it simpler to chew on. Remove bones in cooked meat as these tend to splinter when the dog bites them. The small bone pieces are a choking hazard that you should avoid.

Look for the healthiest recipes for dog treats you can find. But make no mistake, it doesn't mean you can overfeed the dog just because the food is "healthy". So many canine sicknesses could have been avoided by simply monitoring the calorie and nutrient intake of the animal. Engage the dog in regular exercise for his best health.

Remember, it is up to you to ensure your pet's well-being. Take care of him but more than that-spend quality time with him. This is worth more to him than anything combined. Of course, I don't really need to tell you that- find a healthy and happy dog and you will find a loving master not far behind.
