Historic restorations projects can take a lot of time to complete. One is often faced with many issues to maintain the integrity of the property and not do anything that will distract from its historical appearance. Some governmental agencies have taken the step to provide guidelines for a contractor to follow when working on these projects. Some of these guidelines how best to repair and restore the brick work on a building so the facade looks as originals as possible.

A person will often want to survey the building and find out what has to be done to protect it and retain is aged appearance. One thing that has to be done is determining how well the bricks have held up over the years. This usually requires a person checking every brick that looks like it will need some type of attention as the project progresses to the outside. Once areas have been located that need work, one must figure out how best to address whatever issues they have found.

Some bricks are often beyond the point of being restored and will need to be replaced. One will usually have to find similar looking bricks to exchange with the ones that are no longer useful. This can take some effort to locate others that are as aged as the ones that are being replaced. Some people have resorted to producing reproductions to maintain a good appearance for the building.

Sometimes one only needs to clean the facade to restore its original appearance. One will want to avoid caustic cleaning agents when performing the chore. These acids can actually eat into the material and cause a lot of damage. Some experts suggest using a soft bristled brush with gentle cleaning agents to get this job done correctly.

A major cause of brick failure is the deterioration of the mortar that holds them in place. This material can erode over time by the constant battering of wind, rain, snow and ice. One has to be careful when replacing the mortar.

One trick that is used is mixing colors into the mixture that helps to replicate the appearance of the existing mortar. A person should try to match up the color of the existing mortar as close as they can. New mortar will stand out and detract from the building's appearance.

Historic restorations can take a lot of effort. There are normally many concerns that have to be addressed. The priority is often to restore the look of the building to its original appearance as best as possible.
