General Introduction To Laptop Backup

By Kristen Waller

Most people consider having a laptop than a PC. These devices provide an obvious benefit when it comes to portability. However, despite the advantages of having them portable, they too come with disadvantages. Data could be lost when devices having them get stolen or damaged. Given this, a laptop backup is very important.

One of the primary reasons why data gets lost is the loss of the laptop itself. Precautionary measures should be made to address that problem. These devices should not be made obvious at areas where the likelihood of someone stealing them is high. Devices created to disallow access to potential thieves will also offer protection.

Damages are often caused physically such as dropping or bumping them. This is another common problem leading to loss of data. Aside that, environmental conditions such as temperature, along with how old disks are also affect them. Given this, a reserve device for storing data is important.

Several means can be employed to address this problem. External devices that store data is a common option. Devices available that could do that are optical discs, flash drives, and portable hard disks. They differ in prices and have their own pros and cons.

When it comes to cost effectiveness, optical discs provide the best option. Purchasing by bulk of DVD-R discs will cost lesser per GB price compared to having a 500GB external hard disk. However, when it comes to convenience, they may not be a good option specially when large data need to be copied. One will have to swap discs which may take long in order to copy all data.

When recording data, longevity of the device carrying it should be ensured. Hard disks can be relied for five years. Flash drives last ten years. Meanwhile optical media can live as long as a century though the use of this media is doubtful after such length. However, these measurements on longevity are still affected by many external factor which could significantly affect them. For example, constant recording on DVD-Rs shortens life span. There have even been reports of defective ones after only two years of use.

A great alternative can be seen with online services catering to data storage and retrieval needs. They come with fees. Data are safeguarded there and only the specific client can access them. Even staff could not access data as this can only be accessed by a keyword needed to decrypt them which is given to the customer only. Form of media used is constantly updated by them.

However, despite given advantage of online data storage, some factors still exist that place certain risks and disadvantages. Online security is one. Broadband limits may also make uploading and downloading them take longer. This will not be a problem for those having fast Internet connection.

The days where only one PC or laptop is needed by an individual is already gone. Data contained in them, be it for business or personal use, are so valuable. It covers valuable information such as financial data, passwords, records, even personal data such as pictures or music. Given that, laptop backup is necessary.
